Out Now: The Monkees, 50 / MONKEES FOREVER
For all the press that The Monkees’ GOOD TIMES! album has been getting, the fact that the band has a very successful new LP shouldn’t overshadow the fact that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork first joining forces as recording artists and, yes, TV stars, too. To celebrate this fact as well as to help educate the youngsters whose first encounter with The Monkees is the GOOD TIMES! album, we’ve put together two best-of compilations tied to the guys hitting the big 5-0.

Oh, sure, you know they wanna rock, and they’ve made it quite clear that they’re not gonna take it, but beyond that, just how much do you really know about these characters who call themselves Twisted Sister? Well, for those of you who have an interest in looking beyond the band’s two biggest hits and a desire to begin exploring their back catalog, we’ve got a perfect gateway drug for you: TWISTED SISTER: BEST OF THE ATLANTIC YEARS.

Six-Pack: Jeff Tweedy
We’ve had a lot of birthdays within the Rhino catalog lately, and we’ve been having a lot of fun using those occasions to spotlight some of the guest appearances that the birthday boys and/or girls have done at various points during their careers, but having chosen the name “Six-Pack” as the catch-all name for these pieces is starting to feel like alcoholics, because it seems like we’re knocking out a six-pack every day!

Rhino Factoids
43 years ago today, Bobby Darin took his final bow on the concert stage, and even though he wasn’t aware at the time that he’d never do another show, it’s evident from the reminiscences of those who knew and worked with him that he suspected he was in the home stretch of both his career and his life.

Happy Anniversary: Better Than Ezra, How Does Your Garden Grow?

18 years ago this week, Better Than Ezra released their third album on Elektra Records, an effort which found the band shifting into different musical territories and seemingly finding themselves creatively reinvigorated in the process.

BTE fans got a preview of How Does Your Garden Grow? when “One More Murder” was included on the soundtrack to the first X-Files feature film, and there was little question that the band was delving into darker territory, but it was easy to write off the darkness as being appropriate for the film. It soon became evident, however, that the band was intentionally staring into the abyss, with their new album offering a subtitle: “A Series of Nocturnes.”

Six-Pack: Shaun Ryder
Shaun Ryder, best known as frontman for Happy Mondays and Black Grape, turns 54 today, which – if you’ve read his 2011 autobiography Twisting My Melon, in which he details his past pharmaceutical exploits – is nothing short of remarkable. To celebrate the date of his birth, we’ve put together a six-pack of tracks that Ryder worked on with other artists.
