Richard Pryor: An Appreciation

by Reggie Collins

Over the past decade or so, everyone seems to use athlete Michael Jordan's justifiably revered name as a sort of metaphoric benchmark for excellence. You know, "(Fill in highly-regarded person's name) is the Michael Jordan of (fill in that person's field of expertise)." But, with all due respect, Michael Jordan wasn't even big enough to hold a basketball when legendary comedian Richard Pryor came along--and Richard raised the bar for stand-up comedy at least as much as Michael did for sports. So perhaps it would be more apropos to say that Michael Jordan is the Richard Pryor of basketball because, in the world of comedy, there's Richard Pryor and then there's everybody else. It goes without saying that there have been several brilliant post-Pryor comedians. However, as Damon Wayans once said, "Any comic who ain't stole from Richard ain't funny."

And It's Deep Too! producers Steve Pokorny (left) and Reggie Collins (right) with Richard Pryor at The Laugh Factory, Hollywood, CA, October 26, 2000. (Photo from Rhino/KJLH-sponsored release party for Richard Pryor box set.)

Richard Pryor made his first impact on me in 1974, when I was in the seventh grade. My best friend, Randy Ades, turned me on to a newly-released album his older sister had that we weren't supposed to be listening to called That Nigger's Crazy. Randy and I would listen to it in my bedroom with the volume turned waaaaay down to avoid parental detection, and we'd be laughing our asses off. Nothing is more appealing than getting an earful of an adult talking about taboo stuff in a hilarious manner with your best buddy when you're 12 years old. I had never heard profane language or even the "n"-word on a record before. For you young'uns reading this, keep in mind that rap, hip-hop, and even Prince's Dirty Mind album, did not yet exist. (More than two decades later, I discovered that one of my fellow Rhinos, Steve Pokorny, had had a similar childhood experience back in the day. Having that in common was partly responsible for our fledgling friendship, setting us on the course of putting together the nine-CD box set And It's Deep Too! The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings (1968-1992), with the invaluable assistance and cooperation of Pryor's former wife and current manager, Jennifer Lee.)

As I got older I realized that there is so much more to Richard Pryor's humor than his controversial choice of words. We all have a right to our tastes and sensibilities, but I've always thought that those who can't get past Richard's colorful language were totally missing the point. Lily Tomlin once said that Pryor's street vernacular was akin to the seasoning or salt-and-pepper on a very substantial meal, but it's not to be confused with the meal itself. Quite a few subsequent "shock" comics appear to have learned from Richard's style, but, unfortunately, not his substance--and it is Pryor's substance, with its underlying insights, truth, and humanity, that makes his brand of comedy so compelling. Richard himself put it best: "What I'm saying might be profane, but it's also profound."

Those who only know Richard Pryor from watered down, '80s-era misfires like the movies The Toy, Brewster's Millions, and Harlem Nights--which would be most of you under the age of 35--have also been shortchanged. Don't get me wrong. Richard had more than his share of memorable cinematic moments over the course of his career, but judging him by his checkered film output and not by his groundbreaking stand-up comedy is like getting an accurate read on Elvis by his even-spottier flicks (Roustabout or Girls! Girls! Girls!, anyone?) and Las Vegas years, but ignoring his seminal mid-'50s recording sessions for Sun Records. So chuck Superman III, and check out Pryor's classic stand-up films, especially Live In Concert and Live On The Sunset Strip.

You can't hear contemporary comedy without hearing Richard Pryor. Now, of course, Richard was influenced by certain comedians who preceded him as well, like Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory, Bill Cosby, and Lenny Bruce. But Pryor took those influences and created something totally unique. When I hear most of the comics who have come along in the last 20 years, there are several moments when I think, "That sounds like Richard." When I hear Richard Pryor, I don't think of anyone but Richard Pryor. He's one of a handful of pivotal individuals who completely redefined and rewrote the rulebook for his art form. He not only left you laughing, but also thinking and feeling. He wrested extraordinary public laughter from extraordinary personal pain. (Anyone who has read about the details of his life beyond its plethora of high profile misadventures can tell you that the drugs, the failed marriages, the fire, and his current battle with multiple sclerosis are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.) His uncanny ability to make us empathize with his jaw-dropping, but very human life experiences created an act that is impossible to follow.

Of course, all of the above would be for naught if the man didn't also happen to be the funniest motherf**ker on the planet.

Richard Pryor is not the King of Black Comedy.......He is the king of COMEDY!

I am still in shock. By far, one of the best comedians to have ever graced a stage. I will miss you my brother...

I want to say how sorry I am. The world has lost one of the Best, but heaven gained him! My thoughts and prayers are with all of the family especially Deb and Domino!

God bless you Richard Pryor, your hard life on this plane is over and somewhere you are making people laugh.I can only envy them.

i remember seeing you on the sullivan show. there was something about you. skinny cat, amazing eyes, funny funny funny...and *real*.
some stuff i didn't quite understand, but my mom and dad laughed long and hard.
later, i got it. i got you.

i'm thankful we live in a time where there are records kept of performances, because you will never be forgotten, and will continue to inspire.

The movie where he played a race car driver was "Greased Lightning".

Richard; I grew up listening to your outstanding comedy as a teenager. I loved it then, and I still love it now.
Rest in Peace my friend...your work & laughter that you have provided us on earth will be sadly missed.

Richard is the best of the best. I grew up with Richard Pryor and Muhammad Ali and Dr. Martin Luther King and I have to say that as a child of the "60's" I have had the best childhood ever known to man. He is one of the people who has done more for Black people than anybody else. I could go on forever. I watch Comicview all the time and no one even comes close to my main man Richard Pryor. All I say and have ever said is LADIES AND GENTLEMEN MR. RICHARD PRYOR!!! He always gave me something to say back to prejudice!!! God bless and keep Mr. Richard Pryor!!! I love him.

Very sincerely yours,

Douglas E. Jones (List)

Richard Pryor has been a very special actor to me for years even when I was a kid and the world will never be the same without him. There will never be another like him.

Rich you are the best, I don't use the term lightly. A dirty word does not a comic make. Richard told his story in his stories langauge. Others that followed thought that to use bad language was all that it took to be funny. They are miles away from the truth. Rich I love you man you are the best.

and that he was! one of the best of our time. He cannot be duplicated. Baby, you will be missed.

Thanks for all the laughs

RICHARD PRYOR WAS THE KING OF COMEDY. TO PUT IT PLAIN AND SIMPLE HE BROUGHT RACE RELATIONS TO THE FOREFRONT THRU COMEDY FOR WHITES TO UNDERSTAND BLACKS IN AWAY THAT IT WAS COMFORTABLE. HE WILL BE TRUELY MISSED. IBH-ATLANTA GA

It's amazing how many of us first heard Richard Pryor in our rooms, the volume down low, with a friend, hiding form our parents......laughing our asses off!!

Richard Pryor will be missed!

His life helped me appreciate my own life and the value of being yourself no matter what the circumstances. And his comedy was, and still is a band-aid for the black soul. Thank you Richard Pryor

THE REAL "KING" OF COMEDY!!!
He'll be missed!

I wonder how many of us "children of the 70's"...sneaked a richard pryor album on the "record player" or tape in the "8-track", turned the volume down low and laughed to you couldn't laugh no more? Gotta be millions of us!

Like many of you, I've seen and heard most of Mr.Pryor's material. I purchased his box set immediately after I heard of his death. I will add it to my current collection of Richard Pryor media, Long live Richard the KING OF COMEDY!! He will be missed.

Richard Pryor was one of the greatest comedians of any color, of all time. He was bold enough to take a stand on social issues but be funny about it at the same time. Everytime we think of Richard, we should laugh it up because he brought so much joy into our lives. Rest in Peace.

RICHARD WAS THE STORYTELLING KING OF ALL TIME...JUST LISTENING TO HIM AND YOU COULD PAINT A PICTURE WITH HIS WORDS...GOD BLESS YOU FOR YEARS OF COMIC GENIUS THAT TOUCHED MY SOUL...UPPA

Richard Pryor was a trailblazer and one of the true Kings Of Comedy.
Lamar Cole

TO RICHARD,

THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER MAN LIKE YOU.THROUGH THE PAIN AND SORROW THAT YOU EXPERIENCED, YOU FOUND A WAY TO TURN A FROWN UPSIDE DOWN. YOU ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE A INSPRATION TO ME. THE FIRST BLACK MAN TO EVER TRULY SPEAK HIS MIND AND GET LAUGHS OUT OF IT. YOU SPOKE THE TRUTH AND CLEARED A PATH FOR MANY GREAT FOLLOWERS - EDDIE, MARTIN, CHRIS,DAMON, AND DAVE WOULDN'T BE HERE IF IT WASN'T FOR YOUR STRENGTH AND COURAGE. I'LL ALWAYS HAVE PLACE IN MY HEART FOR YOU. REST IN PEACE, RICH..YOU WILL BE MISSED.....MANNY

Richard Pryor was the funniest man alive!! He's one of the only people that can make me laugh until it felt like my insides would explode. It's a good feeling.

Richard Pryor inspired me to see all people as one. Richard Pryor inspired me to view the world as a journey and laughter as my guidance. Richard Pryor will truly be missed, rest in peace. Derek 42yrs.

It's been said that 'laughter is the best medicine'. If that's true, and I believe it is, then Richard Pryor should be at the top of every doctor's list of prescribed medications. His ability to touch the core of the human condition, shine the spotlight on its rawest side, and turn that focus into unbridled hilarity, is sheer genius.

We are all happier, healthier and very blessed for the great comedy and insight you gave us. Thank you, Richard.

I have the 5"x8" envelop & card that, I believe, Bob Goldwaithe held in presenting Richard Pryor-"Funniest stand-up comic-male".Anyone interested in it? rwillienelson@earthlink.com

the film where he played a race car driver was called grease lightening seemed to be a public relations exercise bit like the formula one race car driver lewis hamilton today
