June 21st will see the debut of the second season of HBO's juggernaut series True Detective. This time starring Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, replacing the landscape of the deep south with southern California. As before, music is expected to be a large component of the show's aesthetic. This week's playlist looks at the music of season one, as helmed by music consiglieri T. Bone Burnett.

Ushering in the first season's credits, HBO's True Detective begins with the Handsome Family’s “Far From Any Road" -- a song that sets the tone for what has quickly become one of the most talked about, and critically lauded, shows of 2014. If you have yet to dig in, you need to. Living legend T. Bone Burnett is responsible for the series musical direction and supervision. It's his guiding hand that colors each episode, pulling from the past 7 decades of American music, from early rough-hewn blues, country and R&B, to The Melvins, Father John Misty and beyond (there's even some Kinks, from across the pond).

This week's playlist digs into True Detective's musical DNA.
