Happy Birthday, Andrew Farriss of INXS
Today marks the 55th birthday of the man who either wrote or co-wrote more or less every hit single in the INXS discography: keyboardist/guitarist Andrew Farriss.
There’s a reason why INXS used to be known as the Farriss Brothers: it’s because there were three of ‘em in the lineup: Andrew, Jon (drums and keyboard) and Tim (lead guitarist) were all founding members, along with bassist Garry Beers, drummer Geoff Kennelly, guitarist/saxophonist Kirk Pengilly, and lead vocalist Michael Hutchence. The band formally changed their name to INXS in late 1979, which is when things really started to get rolling for them, although they wouldn’t actually take over the world until circa the release of Kick in late 1987. In fairness, though, the fact that they succeeded in world domination in under a decade is still pretty darned impressive.
To celebrate Farriss’s birthday, we’ve compiled a playlist of all of the band’s singles that feature his name somewhere within the writing credits. This leaves out a couple of covers (“The Loved One,” “Good Times”) and a handful of other familiar songs (“Disappear” and “The Gift” immediately leap to mind as necessary omissions), but when you take a look at the tracks that are featured, it isn’t hard to see what a major asset he was to INXS.
