Michael Davis, 1943 - 2012

Michael Davis, bassist for the revolutionary Detroit band MC5, passed away on February 17, 2012. He was 68.
Originally enrolled in a fine arts program, Davis dropped out when MC5 singer Rob Tyner and guitarist Wayne Kramer asked him to play bass in their polemic rock band. He joined the MC5 on their first three albums, including their seminal debut KICK OUT THE JAMS, before leaving the band in 1972. He would later write, record, and perform with Destroy All Monsters, Blood Orange, and Rich Hopkins and Luminarios and lend a hand in the studio as a producer.
During the past few years, Davis continued to carry on the MC5's legacy through his art. He worked with OBEY's Shepard Fairey on the MC:OBEY line and supplied a painting for MC5: The Very Best Of MC5. He was also successful in the street art scene, collaborating with Foundation Skateboards to design a commemorative line of decks and t-shirts.
Davis also co-founded the non-profit Music Is Revolution Foundation, dedicated to supporting music education programs in public schools. The organization raises public awareness about the ability of music education to increase cognitive ability and test scores, reduce absenteeism and drop-out rates.
