Now Available: Cyndi Lauper, “Hard Candy Christmas”

If you've kept your eyes open, you might've already read that Cyndi Lauper has been busy recording a country album, one which will be released by Sire Records (her “dream label,” if you trust the word of Rolling Stone) and is being executive-produced by living music legend Seymour Stein. Now, if you keep your ears open, you'll be able to hear a song from those sessions: Lauper's take on Carol Hall's “Hard Candy Christmas,” best known for Dolly Parton's version on the soundtrack to The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Lauper opted to cover the song after spotting the words “What Would Dolly Do?” written in lights above the artwork in her Nashville hotel, but she's long been a fan of holidays tunes, too, which no doubt helped cinch the deal.

"As you look around New York City, there's a lot of people really not doing that well,” Lauper told Rolling Stone. “I just thought that it was one of those songs that can give you strength. Somehow even if you freakin' put up a candy cane and one little Christmas light, it can make you feel better. It's such a wonderful song."
