Now Available: David Bowie, Space Oddity 7” Picture Disc

There's nothing like a picture disc to help music fans see an old release in a new light, and since we've recently released David Bowie's Five Years box set, the idea of putting out a picture disc from a song contained within that set seemed like way too perfect an opportunity to let it slip by. After we'd come to that conclusion, we thought, “Well, hey, if we're going to do that, then why not celebrate the song that first put him on the pop charts in a big, big way?”

Yes, of course, we know that “Space Oddity” wasn't Bowie's first single, nor was it even his first top-10 hit in the UK, but it was his first UK chart-topper, which would certainly seem to meet the necessary “big, big way” criteria.

This picture disc features the UK single edit of “Space Oddity” on the A-side, with “Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud” relegated to the flip, and as we can't readily imagine a world where the latter track could end up at #1 (although given the infinite number of parallel universes, we're quite sure one must exist somewhere), we think Bowie made the right call with what song ended up on which side. And, of course, each is wonderful in its own way, so you're still 2 for 2 on the top-notch track front.

C'mon, Bowiephiles, you know you want one. Even if you never crack the plastic, this thing would look awesome on your wall. Not that we know where you live, but…uh, wow, this just got weird, so we'll just reiterate: the “Space Oddity” picture disc is available now, so go buy it. You won't regret it.
