This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Grateful Dead, which is a significant milestone by anyone's reckoning, so it seems like the perfect time to issue a new best-of collection, wouldn't you say?
Now, we know what you're thinking: haven't the Dead been on their long, strange trip for enough years by now that anyone who needs a best-of by the band already has one? Well, maybe that's true and maybe it isn't - although, yeah, it probably is - but this being an important anniversary year for the band, there's going to be a lot of celebrations of the Dead's career taking place, including a trio of performances by the surviving original members at Chicago's Soldier Field (they're being dubbed “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead”) and a new documentary directed by Amir Bar-Lev and executive-produced by Martin Scorsese. As such, you have to figure that there's going to be a sudden influx of new Dead fans as a result of all of this stuff.
With that being the case, is it really such a bad thing to give those newbies an equally-new look into the band's best work?
