Now Streaming: The Smiths, “Rubber Ring” / “What She Said”

When it comes to the work of The Smiths, you might get into some gentle arguments about which of the band’s albums is truly the best – some people’s opinions are stronger than other people’s opinions – but you’ll find few fans who’ll disagree with the suggestion that THE QUEEN IS DEAD is right up there with the finest of their full-length LPs. Similarly, music critics around the world have consistently cited the album as one of the greatest of all time. As such, you can well imagine that both Smiths aficionados and music journalists have been bouncing up and down about the impending release of a remastered and expanded version of THE QUEEN IS DEAD, one which is set to hit record store shelves on October 20.

In fact, there’ll actually be three versions of THE QUEEN IS DEAD released that day:

  • Deluxe 3-CD/1-DVD Boxed Set – Featuring the 2017 master of the album; additional recordings featuring demos, b-sides, and alternative versions; the Live In Boston album recorded at the Great Woods Center For The Performing Arts on August 5, 1986; and a DVD featuring the 2017 master of the album in 96kHz / 24-bit PCM stereo and The Queen Is Dead – A Film By Derek Jarman
  • 2-CD version – Featuring the 2017 master of the album and additional recordings
  • 5-LP box – Featuring the 2017 master of the album, additional recordings, and the Live In Boston recording

Stereogum scored the debut of the live version of “Rubber Ring” / “What She Said” from the Great Woods performance – you can check it out by clicking right here – but if you use Spotify, then you can also check it out there.

Yes, we know this won’t make the wait until October 20 any easier. In fact, if anything, it might just make it harder. Until then, you can listen to our Smiths playlist to keep Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Mike Joyce, and Andy Rourke fresh in your mind, and be sure pre-order a copy of the deluxe and expanded version of THE QUEEN IS DEAD, boys. It’ll be here before you know it.
