Remembering John Peel

12 years ago today, the world lost one of the greatest DJs of all time: John Peel.

For Americans, Peel may be best known as the man whose radio program gave birth to an ongoing series of in-studio performances by some of the most notable names in alternative music: the Peel Sessions. But Peel was much more than just a typical DJ. His opinions were held in such high regard that he could effectively make or break an artist with his remarks. Thankfully, it can be safely said that he made far more artists than he broke, with his shows regularly offering wide and varied playlists which included pop, rock, blues, jazz, prog, psychedelia, and any other genre that might happen to strike his fancy on a given day.

To celebrate Peel’s life, we’ve compiled a playlist featuring 50 songs that appeared at various points during his annual Festive 50. Not only does it reveal the diversity that Peel was known for, but it confirms unequivocally that the man had great taste.
