This photo is of the first rock and roll billboard on the sunset strip. I shot it the night of the 1966 Sunset Strip riots, the subject of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth."
When I did these sessions with The Doors it was a time of poetry, music and love, a time when we felt all things were possible. It seemed to me like the iris of a lens had opened. We saw a potential for all people to live together in peace and brotherhood. Although it didn't last, these photos represent some lovely moments that are a window to the innocence and intensity of those times.
As photographer Cartier Bresson said, "It doesn't matter the camera, it doesn't matter the film, it doesn't matter the subject or photographer. What matters is the moment."
Most of these images, all of them available now for purchase, have been in my archives for nearly 40 years and have not been seen or published. As I continue to dig, I will find more unseen images. Our aim is to bring them to light and make them available to fans and collectors.
Enjoy the pictures and enjoy the ride.
Peace,
Bobby Klein
