Hands Across Your Face

This is the very interesting, mysterious and rare occasion of a video called "Hands Across Your Face." There had been a video called "Hands Across America" where they had people linking hands all the way across the country to raise money for some huge charity. That was all the rage – Kenny Rogers and his manager Ken Kragen were very instrumental in that; they had all kinds of stars around here, but also everyday people, and I think they actually managed to link up all across the country. Soon after that, some company did a video called "Hands Across Your Face," which was a charity for the Ramones, in 1986. The '80s were the years of videos; everybody was making videos about everything; I was working on two or three a week. On this one they had many local music people, like members of X, Rodney Bingenheimer, the guys in Sparks, Weird Al Yankovic, and many others. Here's Rodney in his Monkees shirt; right next to him is Toni Basil. They got in the studio and sang this song -- I'm not sure who wrote it or whatever happened to it – very much like the one Michael Jackson did, "We Are The World." I shot "We Are The World" as well; of course, the amazing thing there was that the bleachers were full of people where every single face was just an icon: Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson – every face was someone that you just knew so well.
