Troubadours Of Folk

Here's Tom Petty and Roger McGuinn at the Troubadours Of Folk, which was at U.C.L.A. in 1993. That was a fantastic concert. This picture shows the sun shining, but it had rained all morning, a kind of drizzle, so there wasn't a very large audience. In fact there were probably more people backstage -- there were about a hundred folk performers backstage and it was like old home week. There were people who hadn't seen each other in 20, 30 years. Odetta was there, saying hi to Arlo Guthrie, and Joni Mitchell and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and The Kingston Trio, and Spinal Tap as "The Folksmen." Just everybody you could think of in the folk thing, you know. I remember Roger McGuinn was there meeting his biggest hero, Bob Gibson, who died soon after that. All these people just got to schmooze and hang out; it was one of the greatest times for lots of musicians to get together. So it was a wonderful concert; I don't know what to say about that picture in particular. Roger McGuinn is the folk musician and Tom Petty was there as a guest, and he came onstage and backed Roger on a couple of tunes.
