The Eagles and David Geffen

This was back in ’71 -- the first time the Eagles ever played. An artist called Boyd Elder from Texas was a friend of the Eagles, and he had an opening in Venice at a friend’s art gallery. He later did One Of These Nights, which was a decorated cow skull, all beaded and colored, and did the cover of the new Eagles Very Best Of set (the skull embossed one). The Eagles said that they’d come and play, but they only knew a few songs at that point. I remember them in the corner where the beer keg was leaking all over the floor and them standing in the beer singing “Witchy Woman” over and over again because it was their best song. And there’s David Geffen, who was putting out their first albums. He was a benefactor of everybody in those early Asylum Records days.
