The Blind Boys Of Alabama

The Blind Boys Of Alabama were recording an album at Capitol Records about two years ago. It was a great recording, and they called me to come down and take photos. I was in the little recording booth where the Blind Boys were with their music director, and then their music director left and I was alone in there with them. I'm very quiet when I take photos, and as they were talking to each other I suddenly realized that they didn't know I was there in this little room just about five feet in front of them! I didn't know what to do; I didn't want to click the camera, you know? So I just hovered there literally like a fly on the wall -- a fly on the wall without a camera, even. I didn't want to suddenly disturb them. But then I thought "Gee, I'm kinda sitting here eavesdropping." It was an odd sensation. Later on I was standing there near them and took a few discreet photos and somebody said "Whose taking those photos?" I said "That would be me, over here!" It was a lot of fun; they're really terrific guys and amazing singers. I think they've been together for forty or fifty years. Several months ago I went back to the same studio and took pictures on their recent Christmas album; this was the one before that.
