Review: Malo - Celebracion: The Warner Bros. Recordings

Well, summer’s on its way and the Professor is urging you to soak up some sun, party with your friends, and (most importantly) get funky. It's time to fire up the barbecue and maybe even enjoy a cereveza or two. And, as with any good time, you need a soundtrack! That’s where I come in...if I may be so bold as to suggest the one thing that is sure to turn any afternoon into sweet, sweet remembrance. I am of course referring to the band Malo and their Rhino Handmade boxed set Celebracion: The Warner Bros. Recordings.

Now, you may be saying to yourself, "huh?" Do not fear, the Professor would never lead you astray. Weren’t the Monkees Headquarter Sessions everything you wanted and more? Didn’t the Josie & the Pussycats collection and Jack Webb’s musings give you all the reason ya needed to go on living? But, of course!

Well, I certainly wouldn’t steer you wrong now. Malo was a Seventies Latin rock band that featured Jorge Santana (Carlos’ brother) on guitar and a pumping rhythm section that put them right in the middle of the Latin funk movement of the early ‘70’s. Their biggest hit was a song called "Suavecito" from their self-titled first album.

You’ll get all 4 of Malo’s Warner Bros. albums in this box set, along with non-LP single versions of some of their best songs. What this means is hours of funky Latin beats and silky smooth jams that will have you pouring margaritas and dancing the night away.

So, ladies and gentlemen here is a chance start programming the soundtrack to your summer, should you choose to accept it. Oh, and did I mention that this is a limited-edition collection, so they won’t be around forever.

When you pop on some Malo at your next party, don’t be surprised if you see the affable Professor lounging by your pool. I’m only human...
