Lean, mean, ragged and tuneful, Chicago’s The Ponys are only a garage band insofar as more precise descriptions run the risk of getting unwieldy in a hurry. Fronted by Jered Gummere—who, sure enough, sounds more than a little like Richard Hell—they’re as likely to plow the downtown chord rattle of The Velvet Underground as tap the murk and chime of The Cure. Their recently released second album, Celebration Castle, is a Steve Albini-produced rock triumph, one that stands to grace a few year-end best-of lists. In this exclusive audio interview, rock journalist/Rhino.com contributor Nevin Martell speaks with Gummere about music, bars, and other things that go together nicely.
