The Lefsetz Letter
KZLA
by Bob Lefsetz
As if you needed convincing terrestrial radio was about advertising... America's number one country radio station changed formats Thursday because...you just can't make it appealing to white people. Yup, that's what the head of EMMIS Radio said. In the melting pot of Los Angeles, appealing only to shitkickers, and their middle-class baby boomer brethren who've abandoned rock for country, leaves too much money on the table. Advertisers want to reach MORE people, YOUNGER people, so Emmis took the station urban. That's what L.A. needs. Another urban station. That's an underserved market, what with Power and the Beat and all the Top Forty stations playing the city sound. And there you have what's wrong with terrestrial radio. It's not about the listener, it's about the ADVERTISER! Hugh Panero had it right at XM. In the beginning. XM was an ALTERNATIVE! You had multiple stations in each genre, all of which played many more tracks than their terrestrial counterparts (assuming there was such a thing). As a result, XM was a religion. Sold by its customers more than its advertising. But then Scott Greenstein hatched a star formula at Sirius, and Mel Karmazin was brought into effect it. Suddenly, it was no longer basic cable, but HBO/PAY CABLE! Look at the history of cable TV. Its first inroads were for people who couldn't get a good signal. And then it was about additional choice, a refuge from the bullshit. FINALLY, it became about superstardom, perching atop network TV, looking down. Sirius and now XM are pursuing an HBO/Showtime model, when really something more basic is needed, something just like the initial XM, a cheap place to find refuge from all the bullshit. Fuck Eminem and Oprah and all the dazzling lights no one cares about. Just give us what we used to have, but BETTER! Give us music without commercials. Give us genres that have disappeared from the terrestrial brand. Treat us like friends. We're nomads in the desert, HELP US OUT! But the service with all the momentum, Sirius, isn't really very different from terrestrial. Not only do they have Howard Stern, WITH COMMERCIALS (I'm paying and I've still got to listen to ads?), the music channels have the same jive jocks that used to be on terrestrial, with playlists so tight that the only advantage is the LACK of commercials on music stations. Shit, on Sirius "Free Bird" isn't a tune-out, it's something everybody wants to hear. Makes me puke. In other words, meet the new boss, same as the old boss. I.e. Mel Karmazin. XM, blinking, followed Sirius' lead. They brought in Jon Zellner, who tightened playlists. They signed Oprah for a zillion dollars and she's not even really gonna APPEAR, other than in name. They drove their financials down. They fucked it all up. KZLA's grounding is a HUGE opportunity for satellite. To say HERE WE ARE! WE WELCOME YOU WITH OPEN ARMS! But why would a country fan want Sirius? That's the Howard Stern station. Who knows WHAT the fuck they do in country, if anything. And XM... Isn't that baseball? If the fan knows anything at all? Yes, the satellite services have become known for their HBO-style/klieg-light product and their regular services, which would truly sell them, get no ink. I don't want some celebrity spinning discs, I just want the TUNES! Lee Abrams got all of the above. XM needs a video of his presentation. About segmenting the audience. How sophisticated fans no longer need to hear "Stairway To Heaven", yet you've got to tailor to the unsophisticated too. But Lee was marginalized as XM followed Sirius' steps into the graveyard. So, it looks like the customer is fending for himself. While big business is caught up in an endless circle jerk. Your customer has to be first. Not Wall Street. Everybody in power today is driving listeners to an unregulated Internet, to their iPods, where they have refuge from the bullshit. XM has got country wired. They should have an instant campaign to appeal to country listeners in L.A. But the behemoth moves too slow, and always looks at the dollars first. So XM will probably blow this opportunity. As Sirius runs ragged over them and ruins the business. New York Times

I think Emmis Corp murdered an entire family August 17, 2006, all for greed. KZLA Country was a family. Concerts sold out in seconds, tickets sales were incredible, and they created jobs all over Southern Cal that the new station won't because Los Angeles already has 6 of the same stations on the air. PLUS ~ KZLA FM brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars with the charities the radio personalities asked us to do. There is no one like Brian Douglas, Shawn Parr, Whitney Allen - etc etc ... they helped people get through their day. Emmis woke a sleeping giant and as listeners and lovers of country music, we will not stop until we have a new station in LA --make sure to get your Ribbon for "Save Country Music" and let people know you want your music back.
There is a huge grassroots effort, led by KZLA's fans, to return country music to the radio in LA/OC. Letters to the press, radio & TV, record labels, politicians, the FCC and just about anybody else have gone out in an effort to convince SOMEBODY that LA/OC can support country radio. Southern California's country music fans aren't going to roll over & play dead for EMMIS or anybody else!

Myself and other country music fans here in L.A. are fighting to bring a country station to Los Angeles. We have join together via the internet We will have another country music station very soon. I am getting fed up this cookie cutter format in radio. In this case the Movin' format. AG Los Angeles,CA
What I think is this: I WANT MY COUNTRY MUSIC BACK !!!! And I want it on a regular radio station that I don't have to pay to listen too or one that I don't have to go out and buy a new car radio to listen too. BRING BACK COUNTRY MUSIC TO L.A.
I want to see country music back on the airwaves in los angeles. And I will do whatever it takes to make that happen. I'm tired of the big wigs in companies more about the all mighty dollar, and forgetting about the people of the city.
I want my counrty music back!! I can't afford to pay for radio. Why should I pay. I will help keep up the fight to get country back on the radio. We will keep sending letters and emails until some one listens. We have to many stations like MOVIN. You don't have to worry about what your kids might hear on when listening to country. I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK
I thought this was a free country where to could listen to whatever kind of music you wanted not any mo re we are being dictated to I dont want xm or sirrus I want KZLA and its DJs back in Los Angeles SAVE COUNTRY MUSIC Donna Los Angeles,ca
I, too, want my country music back, and I want it back complete with my extended family of DJ's who were with it when it left! I want the morning laughter with Peter and Ashley and the noontime craziness with Shawn. And one more thing I want.... I want to see everyone responsible for this travisty hung by their 'nads in downtown Los Angeles in broad daylight! Enough said.
I want to turn my car radio and my home radios on and hear my country music and my air personalities along with it. I want to sit back and enjoy listeners win contests, artists and all of the stuff I've spent years listening to. A total guilty pleasure that never in a million years did I think could happen in Los Angeles. If L.A. lost any one of those dance music stations....I wouldn't have felt it at all. Bring back some COUNTRY and our GREAT FORMER KZLA jocks with it. We can only create a better station now. And with all of the support from the LISTENERS that we have created, we are bound to start the NEW YEAR with a One-Of-A-Kind COUNTRY STATION in Los Angeles. Come on corporate AMERICA.....put your money where OUR music SHOULD BE!!!!!
Thanks for your article about the death of the radio station formerly known as KZLA. I listen to XM now in the South Bay of LA County and it is better than no country radio, not as good as having a local voice I can get to know. Highway 16 is advertising The Country Bash Concert and promoting itself on itself as the only country choice for LA. I want country FM back. I want to phone in requests. I want to hear from people in my community. I want to participate with local charities. I want to attend concerts that I know about because my radio told me they were coming to town. I want my FM radio back with the music I love. I really miss my radio. ~Frangelica
I just want to say that I want my country music back. KZLA was a part of my family and I miss it very much. The music you could listen to all day and have everyone in the family listen to without ears being covered up, disc jockeys who made your day go by a little easier. I grew to love country music and LA/OC needs a country music back on the radio. "I want my country music back"! Kay from LA
I think Emmis made a big mistake on the way they quit KZLA. We all want our country back but we want our family back that has been put together by dee jays who invited to join the KZLA family. We were all invited and we all stayed until AUG 17th. Now we have a family on countryboards.com and we need and want our country back. Also one cheap shot at kmvn it should have been FAH Q
Country music has to return to LA and Orange County. What's so great about another urban station. Too much urban exists if you ask me. I have never been asked what radio station I listen to. How do these ratings get generated anyway?
I miss my KZLA & DJ's. I don't think its fair that we don't have any country music to listen to anymore. I don't want to have to pay for it either as others get their choices of music free!! I believe Emmis Communications and Dees Productions did this intentionally as neither like country music. We should all discourage our friends and family of buying and supporting their sponsors. Let the country music fans of LA/OC be heard!!!
"Who knows WHAT the fuck they do in country, if anything." What a dumbass comment! If you pull your head out you'll see that country music serves the community and the economy in it's hometown, moron! KZLA supported many efforts to get help to various organizations and community needs where they would otherwise not get any support at all. The KZLA listeners responded in droves to pack trucks filled with supplies to Katrina victims while the Government was pointing fingers at each other. We sell out concerts to show the artists we are there to support their efforts and in turn they support ours. We help get kids supplies for school when they can't afford them as well as affordable housing. It's not just about the music, it's about family and we in L.A. want our family back. black3red8, Long Beach, Ca
Bob, I'm an XM subscriber. Say what you want, Deep Tracks is my favourite channel--still plays WAAAAYYYY more varied classic rock tracks than any Emmis- or Clear Channel-owned terrestrial station out there. Plus, I happen to enjoy their shows featuring Tom Petty ("Buried Treasure"--Tom plays some cool stuff) and Bob Dylan ("Theme Time Radio Hour," which gets downright obscure, much like "Buried Treasure"). It bugs me that they got rid of XM Music Lab, which was channel 51, with all the prog rock and jam bands. I like them just fine without Howard Stern! And as far as terrestrial radio goes, NPR is the only reason to still listen to them, along with community radio (a big shout-out to WKZE FM in Red Hook, NY, and WERU FM in Blue Hill, ME).
