MUSICAL ANTIQUITIES REMIXED AND REDISCOVERED ON ATLANTIQUITY

Some of the finest soul, funk, and jazz of the 1970s gets retrofitted for today's dancefloors with the May 10 release of ATLANTIQUITY. The Rhino/Atlantic Records CD features a dozen vintage Atlantic sides freshly reimagined by some of today's most prolific producers.

ATLANTIQUITY is the brainchild of Los Angeles radio and club DJ Garth Trinidad, who hand-selected a dozen songs from Atlantic's extraordinary collection of artists including jazz vocalist Carmen McCrae, smooth soul singer Donny Hathaway, funk favorites Chic, and the seductive soul group Spinners. The songs were paired with renowned remixers like King Britt, Charlie Dark, and Daz-I-Kue of Bugz in the Attic along with newcomers like GB and Kev Brown. "Each remixer has a unique style, and I picked tracks according to their musical personalities," Trinidad explains. "This was an amazing way for all the DJs to pay homage to artists that have influenced them and introduce these classic artists to a younger generation."

A solo performer as well as member of Jurassic 5, DJ Nu-Mark remixes "Bold And Black," originally recorded by experimental jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris. The new version is powered by an extraordinary bass line and solo from the legendary Carol Kaye -- who's played with everyone from Glen Campbell to Ray Charles. ATLANTIQUITY also features bass work by another acclaimed artist -- Me'Shell Ndegeocello, whose fine fretwork colors the Sa-Ra Remix of Kleeer's "Tonight."

Among the other highlights is Average White Band's "Pick Up The Pieces" remixed by Charlie Dark, a member of Attic Blues and founder of the Blacktronica movement. "Charlie didn't just go in and flip the beat," says Trinidad. "He went in and used all the existing elements of the song to create something completely new, which really embodies the spirit of this project." In addition to producing ATLANTIQUITY, Trinidad also appears on the album with his partner Mr. French. Performing as Metisse, they remix the jazz-funk of Yusef Lateef's "Nubian Lady," stripping everything out except Lateef's flute, and adding a Middle Eastern and African flavor with sitars and tablas over a heavy mid-tempo beat. 

Other artists receiving a 21st century update are Slave ("Watching You"), Sister Sledge ("We Are Family"), Faze-o ("Riding High"), and United 8 ("Getting Uptown [To Get Down]").
A 2-LP version, limited to 5,000 units, will follow on May 24 and features an extended version of the Chic remix.
