QUEENS OF THE SONG AGEFirst-Ever Girl Groups Boxed Set Due From Rhino, October 4
August 01 2005
For too long girl groups have been left at the altar in rock history books. Rhino Entertainment rectifies that oversight with the release of ONE KISS CAN LEAD TO ANOTHER: GIRL GROUP SOUNDS, LOST & FOUND, an incredible 107-artist, 120-song, four-CD boxed set, on October 4. Amazingly, this is the first boxed set ever to gather girl group gems, and the set demonstrates the wide variety of sounds, styles, and subjects that represent the music women were making in the early- to mid-1960s. Many of the leaders of the pack are here: The Supremes, The Ronettes, The Chiffons, Lesley Gore, The Shirelles, and The Shangri-Las, along with very early efforts from Cher, Dolly Parton, Toni Basil, and Jackie DeShannon. But just as great are lost classics by Evie Sands, Reparata & The Delrons, The Whyte Boots, The Cinderellas, and many, many others. Herman's Hermits, Bananarama, and The Hollies may have taken songs like "I'm Into Somethin' Good," "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'," and "I Can't Let Go" and turned them into bigger hits, but one listen to ONE KISS and you'll realize they couldn't make better records than the originals (by Earl-Jean, The Velvelettes, and Evie Sands, respectively). The Beatles and The Everly Brothers got in on the act, too, recognizing the merits of The Shirelles' "Boys" and Carole King's "Crying In The Rain." And if you've never heard Dee Dee (sister of Dionne) Warwick's knockout original version of "You're No Good," prepare yourself. A labor of love from Rhino's Sheryl Farber and co-producer Gary Stewart, ONE KISS follows in the tradition of Rhino's revelatory, genre-defining boxed sets like Nuggets, Beg, Scream & Shout: The Big Box Of '60s Soul, and Loud, Fast & Out Of Control: The Wild Sounds Of '50s Rock by bringing listeners dozens of shoulda-been-classics. And Rhino has given this boxed set the kind of over-the-top packaging it deserves. ONE KISS CAN LEAD TO ANOTHER: GIRL GROUP SOUNDS, LOST & FOUND comes in a mod black-and-white hatbox, while the four digipak CDs inside resemble '60s makeup compacts, and the book, which contains essays by Gerri Hirshey and Gene Sculatti and a track-by-track by Sheila Burgel, looks like a girl's diary. When you see and hear this box, you're gonna want to be where the girls are! |
