September 09 2009
LOS ANGELES --
The "day" just got better. Damn Fine Day (www.damnfineday.com), Rhino's daily e-mail and blog that spotlights outstanding and overlooked songs, will spend one special week premiering a previously unreleased track every day, starting September 14. During the week, Damn Fine Day will reveal five musical gems -- all making their worldwide debut on the site. Damn Fine Day -- Rarities Week Schedule Monday, September 14: Big Star "Thank You Friends" (Demo) Tuesday, September 15: Frank Sinatra "I've Got You Under My Skin" (Live -- Carnegie Hall, 4/8/1974) Wednesday, September 16: Rod Stewart "May You Never" Thursday, September 17: Morphine "5:09" Friday, September 18: The Doors "Roadhouse Blues" (Live -- Felt Forum, 1/18/1970, Second Show) These songs preview five upcoming releases from Rhino/Reprise, all of which will be available for pre-order through Amazon.com. The week kicks off September 14 with the previously unreleased demo of Big Star's "Thank You Friends," re-recorded later for Third/Sister Lovers. This early version surfaces September 15 on Keep An Eye On The Sky. Tuesday will see the premiere of a previously unheard version of Frank Sinatra's classic "I've Got You Under My Skin" recorded at Carnegie Hall on April 8, 1974. This rare gem will be included in the Reprise release Sinatra: New York, a 4CD-1-DVD boxed set due on November 3. Rod Stewart recorded "May You Never" in 1990 during his sessions for Vagabond Heart and it will be heard for the first time anywhere on Wednesday of Damn Fine Day's rarities week. The song will finally be released September 29 as part of The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998. Morphine was one of the most underrated bands of the '90s. The band came to a sudden halt when frontman Mark Sandman died tragically in 1999. The previously unreleased track "5:09" finds the trio in top form laying down a menacing sampling of modern-day blues. The track comes from At Your Service, a 2-disc collection of previously unreleased tracks spanning the band's entire career, arriving on October 6. The "Damn Fine" week concludes with the previously unreleased version of The Doors live performance of "Roadhouse Blues," recorded at the Felt Forum in New York in 1970, the same year the studio version was released on Morrison Hotel. The track will be available November 10 on The Doors: Live In New York. Each day, Damn Fine Day's cadre of A-list music connoisseurs introduces visitors to an amazing handpicked song that deserves a place among the greatest tracks of all time.
