Don't you hate when you finish reading a movie review and you have no idea if the reviewer liked or disliked the film. Pretentious blowhards, all of them! Except, of course, for Jim Ferguson at ABC-TV, this cat seems to love everything. How can someone love everything? I'm beginning to think he loves everything so he can continue to enjoy the free lunches and junkets, but what the hell do I know, I write for Rhino.com and we're somewhere in between Cat Lover's Journal and Modern Welder in the studio's eyes.
Anyhow,no ambiguity here. I loved Riding Giants and highly recommend it. Skateboarding legend Stacy Peralta (Dogtown & Z-Boys) distinguishes himself once again with another explosive, well-researched, entertaining, informative, and downright thrilling documentary.
Riding Giants traces the history of big wave surfing by letting those who defined the sport do the talking. Deftly narrated by Peralta who fills in the holes without getting in the way, the film begins by exploring surfing's early Polynesian roots to its rebirth in California in the 40s, eventually moving back to Hawaii in the 50s, then on to Northern California in the 80s, and finally back to the South Pacific today.
Legends such as Greg Noll, Jeff Clark, and Laird Hamilton, among others are captured on film doing what they do best, and the footage is truly outstanding.
No need to say anymore, if you're a fan of outdoor sports, or man-on-the-edge dramatics, this film's for you. Ten toes up!
