Chicago Plays Rhino

by John Hagelston

There are a lot of guys in Chicago. Not just the city -- the band. Coupling a horn section with a full rock group requires the talents of a lot of musicians. But we had no idea how many boxes came with Chicago until the legendary collective came to Rhino to play for the employees.

The near-hour-long performance celebrated Rhino's recent acquisition of the Chicago catalog. What was originally planned as an intimate gig in the label's Open Forum area was quickly moved to the building lobby to accommodate all the gear -- and workers from throughout the complex eager to hear one of the most successful acts in pop music history live in concert.

There's no way a band with as many hits as Chicago could get to them all before we had to go back to work, but they did cover many highlights of their 35-year career, including "Hard Habit To Break" (with sensational dual lead vocals from organist Bill Champlin and bassist Jason Scheff), "Saturday In The Park," "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," and "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?"

With a few overlooked gems thrown into the mix, the set gave all the members a chance to shine: "Colour My World" showed that Walter Parazaider was as skilled a flautist as he was a saxophonist, Robert Lamm set aside his keyboard to sing and play acoustic guitar on "Beginnings," and trombonist James Pankow traded his horn for percussion to help set a Latin rhythm on another number. Trumpeter Lee Loughnane and electric guitarist Keith Howland (who, having only been in the band for 10 years or so, was referred to as "the new guy") also proved skilled soloists. Even drummer Tris Imboden got time to strut his stuff as the rest of the group prepared for the encore.

In short, these guys can PLAY. And sing -- all to the exacting standards of their records (which will begin appearing in stores under the Rhino imprint beginning in July). By the time they finally wrapped things up with a bravura version of "25 Or 6 To 4," Chicago had turned another hundred or so spectators into fans. They even hung around to chat and sign autographs before treating the staff to a catered lunch.

After 120 million records sold, a Grammy award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, a gig at the Rhino offices may not have seemed like a big deal to Chicago. But we were blown away! On one Friday morning in May, Rhinos got a reminder that in the music business, the music part comes first.

My biggest musical disappointments happen when bands I love break up. Thank God CHICAGO still tours and plays! And RECORDS!! A NEW ALBUM is being released at the end of 2005 -- What a Happy New Year that will be!!

what's paradise and a return to youth....
seeing Chicago with Earth,Wind & Fire in Concert at the Borgata in Atlantic City last night....I felt 18 again!!!
See them for a night you will never forget!!! dh

Chicago finally gets what it deserves- the best reissues in the industry...and I'll always remember seeing Chicago and the Beach Boys at Chicago Stadium with my first love...ahh,youth!

I think that it continues to amaze me that this band is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is there some requirement I'm missing ?

It make me feel very happy to know that they are still there, with their music, even if I don't listen to Chicago further than album V...I've been a fan of this band from 1971 when I was just 11 years old, their music arise such a good memories to me as I often listen to the amazing and pure feeling of Terry Kath's guitar, think he was...Probably the best guitar player, The Top Electric Guitar Player in the whole world...and the only one mencioned for Hendrix as if favourite musician ever. Still there is something about the old band I like even more than the winds section work or these stunning guitar sounds, that's the exciting drunken and rough voice of Terry Kath, to me the trade mark of the sixties, and the real feeling of Chicago.

I have listened to Chicago since the early 70's and have never stopped. I have seen them in concert numerous times and every time I see them I feel like I have seen them for the 1st time. They will always be the best band ever formed. CHICAGO FOREVER!!

Chicago is the greatest band in the world. I'm only 18, but I love them because they play genuinely good music, and it is just great to listen to.

what does the song '5 or 6 to 4' mean

Thank you, Rhino, for the great re-masters - I repurchased every album. I echo the comments regarding footage of the original seven. There are mpegs available here and there online, but the audio/video quality just isn't there. The group dynamics in the Terry Kath days just can't be appreciated through audio alone. Please - we need a professionally produced set of videos!

Hello, I think the pictures of the guys are awesome and i also think that they are a great band.

Chicago is the greatest, period. What I would like to see tho', instead of re-packaging old hits....is a compilation DVD from the early days on...feature Terry Kath...Peter Cetera...etc....right up to the present. That would justify all the greatest hits over time.

What would it take to broadcast a Christmas special with Chicago. The latest Chicago Christmas CD is really the tops

Chicago needs to release a DVD from the "Terry Kath era." If there is enough live video from that first decade or so, it should be compiled on a DVD so people can see what an amazing guitar player Kath was. After hearing Live at Carnegie Hall, I know at least I want to see him playing as well as hearing it at the same time, which would obviously be a DVD.

Awesome, Chicago is my favorite band and I'm only 15! I saw them live with Earth, Wind and Fire last August and just Chicago itself blew me away! You're doing the world a great deal of good sponsoring them. I just hope them come back to Portland in the near future so my little brother can see them for what they really are. You guys rock!

hello, sorry but i don't speak and write good English. I write from Taranto, Italy south city. I listen every day Chicago's music,I love their music and listen to them for 30 years, becouse i'm 52 y.o.
By and Forza Chicago!

Great the best john papi

what a great site!! My wife and I just saw Chicago this past weekend in Wichita Falls Texas for the 1st time and they were great. We can't get them out of our head came to your site for
more and we got just that!! Thanks

It would great to find a DVD of a whole concert of Chicago with Terry Kath on guitar and a report showing the band recording at the famous Caribou Ranch

Great article, but why can't I find "Chicago-Live in Japan" 2 CD set which MSN says was released on the Rhino label this year on your website for sale? I would like to buy it as I am a long time fan since their first album in 1969! Thanks, Ron Lundgren, Jr. onandonron69@msn.com

Greatest band ever, thanks for the music

I too don't understand Chicago (my favorite group of all time) not being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I have heard from numerous sources that they have sold more albums than any other American group in history except for the Beach Boys. They always put on a spectacular concert and I saw them in 2005 with Earth,Wind, and Fire in Portland, Oregon at the Rose Garden. What a magical performance!

Chicago is the best

I'm trying to find Chicago 26 Live. The Chicago official website has a link to Rhino and states we can purchase the CD's. However, I don't see this one available. Can you help me find it ? thanks

Chicago should release on dvd the 1977 live on rockpallast show that was a full concert with all the original band!

I took my girl friend to a concert in Kansas City in '74' am now planning on taking a girl friend to Oklahoma City in '06'. Great as always

C'mon Rhino, release the Chicago Live in Japan in CDs - the quality of the WMA files for the digital album does not give justice to the concert! This is one of the best performances recorded live by the group (better than Carnegie Hall) - What are you waiting for to release it?

I've been a fan since my older cousin sat me down and we listened to "...Transit Authority", II, & III. Being an adolescent musician (drummer) back in '71, I was blown away at the horn arrangements, and Danny's drumming skills! I saw them in Greensboro, NC at the coliseum, Aug. 5, '72. Not ashamed to say I recorded the show on a portable cassette recorder (legal I guess at that time), which I used to do regularly ( Jackson Five, Al Green, Chi-Lites, and others), was so blown away I immediately bought the "Carnegie Hall" masterpiece! So did a friend of mine - we loved this album, and I consider it my all-time favorite album of EVERYTHING I've ever owned! I waited years for the CD version and finally found it at Circuit City this past summer - thank God!
I miss Pete, Danny, and especially Terry. I was fortunate enough to see them with EWF (my favorite R&B band) this summer at Raleigh's Hardee's Pavillion. I even had my 2 teenage son's go with me to see my all-time favorite band(s). I think they thought I was nuts, 'cause I didn't sit down the entire show, except for intermission! (a 33-year span is a long time between concerts!) The new guys are good musician's, but they just can't take Terry, Peter, and Danny's place - it was all I could stand just hearing their voices and playing inside my head! It was almost spiritual. Bobby also seemed kind of tired. His place is really on the Steinway and the B-3! That's his domain, not Bill's. Please Rhino, stock the 1972 Japan album, find some old footage of the original band, and keep them alive! We can't bring Terry back, and Pete and Danny probably wouldn't consider a reunion, so the old archives are all we have! I'm 48 years old and as a former musician and presently a sound engineer, am still very much connected to all types of music, and thank goodness Bob, Lee, Jimmy, and Walt have kept the band going all these years, but we still love the energy and power of the "Serious Seven"! I say "serious" because they were all accomplished musicians and will go down in history as the finest musically talented band of our time - period! Young musician "wannabes" buy the early albums, and the new DVD, listen closely, and take notes!
CHICAGO 4-Ever!!!
-Bob B in NC-

My brother, helped organize a concert at Alumni Hall at DePaul University, I think it was around 1970. I was 8 years old and sat in the front row and was mesmerized for what seemed to be hours.
I'm 43 now and still listen to their music daily, although I prefer the CTA stuff (with Terry Kath) it's all good.
Last summer I sat on a boat on Lake Michigan and listened to them play the opening night at the new facility, Northerly Island... It was the about the 20th time I saw them but they sounded like they did when I was 8, which is a true testament to exactly how talented these guys really are.

Thank you Rhino for keeping this music so available. Whatever combination it is: viable product v.s. appreciation of music worth keeping alive for the next generation. I buy these 'new' cd's and give them to family teens. I know what Chicago's vinyl did for us 30 yrs ago. Thank you.

Also, I would pay plenty for good footage/ DVD of Terry Kath. I was 13 on Jan 23, 1978 (when he died). Now I'm educating my children . THEY LISTEN. There is a God!

I love Chicago, and I do plan to see them soon. However, I really love the orginal lineup and all their classic work from the 1970s. Rhino did such an excellent job of the CD reissues. The only thing I wish is that I wish they would have printed the custom labels on the Rhino CDs that were on the orginal Columbia/CBS releases, but oh well.

please release chicago live from japan

Thanks for the remasters. They´re have and amazing sound. What about a DVD of " Terry Kath era "?...there must be many footage in the vaults.....

Chicago is quite possibly the best American band of all time, at least while Terry Kath was alive. Though I support their current endeavors with all my heart, I long for all the Terry Kath work you can release. As such I join the sizable crowd that kindly asks for a CD release of "Chicago Live in Japan." Carnegie Hall was great, but I want to hear the best of the first three albums AND Chicago V, and I don't have an MP3 player to run the files for Live in Japan. Please do what you can, Rhino. I will jump on the opportunity if you give me it.

Chicago is one of the most legendary bands of all times!

I agree with others. I would love to see a DVD from the Kath days. I cut my rock 'n' roll teeth on Chicago. I know they had 2 tv specials. "Meanwhile Back at the Ranch" and "In the Rockies" ,I believe they were called. Any chance of seeing these on DVD?

where is the Chicago Live in Japan pressing? Vinyl would be excellent, but I might settle for the cd.....Live in Japan is well known to be a much better live performance than Carnegie Hall.

Love what you are doing with this great band but I agree with the others a nice DVD from the terry kath, cetera and serephine days will be a HUGE hit.

Please re-issue Chicago Live in Japan on CD (with bonus tracks would be great!) A DVD of early concerts with the Caribou Ranch TV documentaries would also be a must have. I know a lot of fans would buy them.

I have all the chicago records from their early days, except the Live in Japan, which many reviewers have said is the live version to get....any chance of this happening in my lifetime?

I think it is a big letdown to only release digital wma files of chicago live in japan. My computer is too slow, and I dont think the sound of downloaded files is great anyway.Guess I will have to buy that double album on ebay

Very sly of Rhino, releasing only digital recordings of Live in Japan. You people dont get any praise from me, corporate greedy bottom feeders........

Looking for the chicago live in japan reissue...........cant do it? Dont wanna do it?

Thanks for finally releasing Chicago Live in Japan, it has been spinning in my player for weeks now, keep up the great work!

Definitely need a dvd from the terry kath era! There were plenty of shows that were videotaped including tanglewood 1970, japan 1972, the tv shows, rockpalast in germany 1977 and houston 1977. There would be enough for 2 dvd's. Many of us who loved the original band never got to see them live. This would be a great way to put out some great footage to please us die hards and show the rest of the music world what a great band chicago is and that they should be in the rock n roll hall of fame. The dvd's would be a nice way to celebrate 40 year anniversary.

I've been looking all over for the Chicago 26 CD. Where can I find it?
