If you thought Bjork's recent a capella album, Medulla, made for fascinating listening, wait until you hear Petra Haden's take on The Who Sell Out. Using just her multi-tracked voice, the former That Dog singer attempts to recreate every last detail the Who's 1967 classic, including Pete Townsend's jackhammer guitar riffs, Keith Moon's manic drum fills, even the fake commercials for products like Odorono deodorant between tracks. The idea was suggested by Haden's bass playing friend Mike Watt and took three years to execute, before which the singer says she had never heard the original album. You would never guess from her intricate versions of "I Can See For Miles" and "Our Love Was Is," each built up with heavenly choruses. No, it doesn't sound much like the real thing but that's not the point. This is a tribute album that cuts deeper than most. Through her efforts, Haden, one of jazz musician Charlie Haden's triplet daughters, has stripped back the layers on one of the Who's most frequently overlooked albums, replaced its musical pyrotechnics and hippie-era cheek with vibrant melodies and, most significantly, exposed its heart.
