Daughter of Arlo and granddaughter of Woody, Sarah Lee Guthrie has some big shoes to fill. As a child she was part of her dad's road show, but she had no musical plans of her own until she met Johnny Irion. Irion taught her guitar, encouraged her songwriting, and became her musical and life partner. Guthrie has the name recognition, but her songwriting still isn't up to the family tradition. She has two writing credits here, "Holding Back," an average love song, and "Morning's Over," a blues most notable for the dissonant fiddle work of Jay and Ruthie Ungar. Her collaborations with Irion fare better. "Cease Fire" and "Swing Of Things" are the kind of bedrock country duets that made Conway and Loretta and George and Tammy legends, heartfelt love songs that everyone can relate to. The song that most conjures the spirit of Woody Guthrie is Irion's "Mixed Blessings," carrying a gently anti-religious message that Sarah's granddad would appreciate. Irion also channels Neil Young on "Gervais," a rocker that rails against the (other) Stars and Bars flying over the South Carolina state capital. Ultimately, it's Irion's songwriting and blazing guitar that make this disc shine.
