A year after the debut of Virgin Ubiquity, the second volume in the series continues to focus on previously unreleased material from '70s soul-jazz legend Roy Ayers. Drawn from the prolific musician's vast collection of recordings, these are gems that were never given to his former record companies and have only appreciated over time. To those unfamiliar with Ayers, you probably know him better than you realize. Countless pieces of his work regularly reappear in contemporary music in the form of samples, while his classic number "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" remains the quintessential summer anthem. Ubiquity II is a cleaned-up batch of tunes that, although remastered for the present, retains its footing in the past. That's not to say the songs are dated, but rather, timeless. Like the first volume, Ubiquity II is culled from the 1976-1981 period and features honey-sweet vocals not just by Ayers, but also from others equally distinguished but perhaps even more unsung. For a wash of true soul, Ubiquity II is it. And to round out the entire experience, pick up the first in this series.
