The Tomorrow Show With Tom Snyder: Punk & New Wave (Shout! Factory)

:: Track list & details

The Tomorrow Show would not have been so great had Tom Snyder known what any of his guests were actually talking about. However, what he lacked in musical cred he made up for with a finely crafted bluntness that called for attention and warranted what would become one of Dan Aykroyd's most famous skits on Saturday Night Live (his impersonation of Synder would resonate for years). This double-disc release from Shout! Factory gathers eight Tomorrow Show episodes spanning 1977-81 and featuring live performances from some of the most influential artists of punk and new wave (Elvis Costello, Ramones, Iggy Pop) plus roundtable discussions with Joan Jett, Paul Weller (The Jam), and concert promoter Bill Graham, among others. The infamous "interview" with John Lydon, which consisted of Synder and Lydon engaged in a near screaming match, is also included. Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics runs around in a barely-there schoolgirl uniform while spray-painting, bashing, and eventually blowing up a car during a performance. Elvis Costello battles Snyder's wits and serves up such classics as "New Lace Sleeves" and "Watch Your Step." A very young Iggy Pop gives a bright-eyed, gap-toothed interview that actually proved to be one of the more lighthearted of the bunch. This release takes a well-deserved look back at Synder's The Tomorrow Show, which, even if by accident, captured some of the best late-night television moments and legendary musicians in the making.

Comments:

agreed. the clash doing "radio clash" was maybe the best musical moment on this show. i was really bummed to not see them here. though i loved this DVD.

where's the clash. they were on his show?

it's rumored that licensing issues kept the clash out.

Tom Snyder-King of Punk Rock. Great stuff.
