Ben Harper's latest combines old-school style with psychedelic charm, speaking volumes on politics, racial tensions, and love lost. The first disc in the two-disc set is mainly focused on Harper's sharp views on poverty and government suppression, especially the title track. As Harper sees it, "Politics is a drag/They put one foot in the grave/And the other on the flag." "Black Rain" is indicative of the singer's forecasted revolt that will happen when the population of New Orleans takes a stand against the government that left them "swimming for their lives " and has "no sympathy for us... selling false hope like some dope we're addicted to."
Harper's rage and betrayal is clearly expressed in his music, which is a wonderful blend of James Brown and Lenny Kravitz. These are songs that one could almost expect to hear sung by a chain gang on a hot summer day. If you listen close enough, you can almost taste the underlying hint of gospel.
Gun's second disc is significantly less political and more focused on matters of the heart. Singing of love lost and love maintained, Harper stays true to his eclectic style and offers poetry that will not soon be forgotten. He clearly has and old soul, and he does it justice by reminding us all of an era lost but hardly forgotten.
