Interview: Nick Laird-Clowes of The Dream Academy (Article)
Tuesday, July 7, 2015
Interview: Nick Laird-Clowes of The Dream Academy By Will Harris In America, The Dream Academy tends to be best known for one song: “Life in a Northern Town.” Thankfully, this is an instance where one can safely say that if you're going to be known for one song, that's a pretty great one to be known for, but it in no way comes close to telling you who the group really was, how they came about, or what sort of legacy they've left behind beyond that one song. For example, did you know they actually had two top-40 hits? True story. History tends to forget that “The Love Parade” actually hit #37

New This Week: Supergrass (Article)
Wednesday, November 25, 2015
Earlier this year, we reissued Supergrass's debut album, I Should Coco, on 180-gram vinyl, referring to it as “an exuberant pop album” and giddily describing it as “one of the true gems of the Britpop era.” We stand by both of those descriptions, as most anyone would if they've heard songs like “Alright,” “Lenny,” “Mansize Rooster,” and “Caught by the Fuzz,” which is why we're so excited to announce that we are celebrating the occasion of the album's 20th anniversary by expanding I Should Coco into a three-disc set. First up, unsurprisingly, is Disc 1, which features a newly remastered version

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Sixties Instrumentals Primer" (Article)
Friday, August 22, 2014
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY This was a number two hit for Hugo Montenegro back in 1968, it was a cover of the original theme from the flick done by Ennio Morricone. Yes, it's strange, but the sixties were full of instrumental hits, and when this broke most people had no idea who Clint Eastwood was, it was only after this that we started to hear about spaghetti westerns, Clint didn't break through big in American films until the seventies, so this certainly wasn't a hit on his coattails. Many boomers can whistle the riff, just ask them! NO MATTER WHAT SHAPE (YOUR STOMACH'S IN) The original

This Month's Picks...By Lauren G. Stay tuned for more! The Brit Box Various Artists If we are being honest here, it all started with Damon Albarn - the floppy hair, the bright blue eyes, the glimmering hope that maybe we could fall in love some day (based solely on the fact that his then girlfriend, like me, was Jewish. Ridiculous. I am.) At the risk of generalizing, I suspect that's how most girls are first drawn to music. We image these handsome devils are singing their songs about us, to us, for us. So like the ladies who came before me, their walls plastered with posters of The Beatles and

Stay Tuned By Stan Cornyn: These B-52s Hardly Dropped Bombs (Article)
Tuesday, December 17, 2013
Every Tuesday and Thursday, former Warner Bros. Records executive and industry insider Stan Cornyn ruminates on the past, present, and future of the music business. In the late 1960s, a Beehive was a woman’s latest fashion hairstyle: long hair piled up in a cone, something like a traditional hive created by bees. Pile it up, and spray it with Aqua Net. The longer her hair the better her hive. To end any confusion, what’s needed for clarity is to distinguish those B-52s from the America’s bomber airplanes. So look here: These B-52s Gave Us “Party Time” For new wave group B-52s, both girls

Happy Anniversary: Crosby, Stills & Nash, Crosby, Stills and Nash (Article)
Thursday, May 29, 2014
45 years ago today, one of the guys from the Byrds, a dude from Buffalo Springfield, and one of the blokes out of the Hollies released their first full-length studio endeavor as a trio, an effort which quickly found its way into the upper reaches of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and brought them a pair of hit singles to boot: “Marrakesh Express” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”). It’s a well-told story at this point, but for you kids out there who don’t know the legend of CS&N, here’s how the gang got together in five simple steps: 1. In October 1967, Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman decided
