Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Floating: New Age Excursions (Article)
Monday, February 23, 2015
Actor/musician/activist Jeff Bridges recently unveiled his sleep companion project entitled Dreaming With Jeff. “The world is filled with too many restless people in need of rest—that’s why I filled my sleeping tapes with intriguing sounds, noises and other things to help you get a good night’s rest...Sit back, close your eyes, and nod off.” That's Bridges in his own words describing the impetus behind the project, one that exists both online via his site and the recently released companion album The Sleeping Tapes. This week's playlist excursion focuses on not only sleep, but something (more

Rhino Interview: Mike Rutherford (Article)
Friday, February 20, 2015
There are likely comparatively few music fans who think of Mike Rutherford for his work as the founder of Mike + The Mechanics over his efforts as a member of Genesis, but – believe it or not – Rutherford has had the same number of chart-topping hits in the U.S. with both groups: one. Oh, sure, Genesis may have had far more hit singles overall, but they only hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 once, and that was with “Invisible Touch” in 1986, while Mike + The Mechanics ascended to the top spot with “The Living Years” in 1989. We mention this for three reasons: 1) to remind you that Mr. Rutherford

Now Available: Five – count ‘em – Five Genesis Reissues on CD (Article)
Tuesday, February 17, 2015
The Genesis reissue campaign soldiers on, this time with the band’s studio output during the half-decade between 1976 and 1981, all of which you can now hear individually with the remastering that was done for the Genesis catalog back in 2007. The 1976-1981 era was a transitional period for Genesis on a couple of different occasions, but the music that emerged within those years helped take a prog-heavy gang of musicians and turn them into proper pop/rock heroes. Now, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is all down to individual opinion, but we know for a fact that all of these albums

Digital Roundup: 2/11/2015 (Article)
Wednesday, February 11, 2015
After our Digital Roundup made its grand return for 2015 a couple of weeks ago, you may have noticed that we promptly followed that up with a week of radio silence. Look, people, it’s a slow roll-out. We’ve got to build, you know? But we’re back this week, and although it’s only a small showing (the sum total of our additions is three digital 45s, which makes for a whopping six songs), we dare say it’s a good week for Betty Harris fans. “Cry to Me” / “I’ll Be a Liar” – The A-side is, as R&B fans probably already know, a cover of a Bert Berns song which was famously recorded by Solomon Burke

Doing a 180: Dr. John and The Meters (Article)
Wednesday, February 11, 2015
It’s a New Orleans kind of week here at Rhino, with a pair of classic ‘70s albums from folks who hail from the Big Easy getting the 180-gram vinyl treatment. Dr. John, In the Right Place: He was born Malcolm John Rebennack, his friends call him “Mac,” but you probably know him as Dr. John, and if you’re familiar with his music at all, then you know this album, which remains the most commercially successful effort of his career. Produced by Allen Toussaint, In the Right Place also includes the good doctor’s biggest single, “Right Place, Wrong Time,” which kicks off the proceedings in suitably

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Oscillate Wildly: The Smiths (Article)
Monday, February 2, 2015
And here we have the sound of inevitability - a Smiths companion piece to last month's entry, Morrissey 1988-1992. Several years back, Rhino released a comprehensive, remastered, Smiths box set comprised of the group's total output. Said box then remained in my car for the next three months ushering in a revitalized interest in the band not rivaled since the 9th grade. And while the Smiths are often associated with the drizzling blues and greys of Morrissey's lyrics (once described by Ryan Adams as "the Pope of sad people"), my own re-appreciation of the group's work largely leaned on the
