Happy Birthday, Alice Cooper! (Article)
Tuesday, February 4, 2014
Who’s 66 today but still says he’s 18? Why, Alice Cooper, of course! And, yes, we did use some approximation of that joke last year, but we decided to use it again because we – wait for it – Love It to Death. (Don’t worry: that joke we’re retiring.) We’re not sure if it’ll make him feel his age or make him feel like a kid again, but to celebrate his birthday, we thought we’d offer up the first song Cooper ever wrote all by his lonesome…or at least that’s how he described “Shoe Salesman,” from 1970’s Easy Action, to the Onion AV Club, anyway. “I think I was trying to make it sound like a Paul

THE KING OF SOUL THE QUEEN OF SOUL Rhino Spotlights Otis Redding And Aretha Franklin With New Boxed Sets, The King Of Soul And The Queen Of Soul Four-Disc Collection Now Available Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin’s powerful voices continue to be the standard by which all other soul singers are measured. But they also share another bond through “Respect.” Redding originally wrote and recorded the song in 1965 and two years later Franklin’s cover version transformed it into a female-empowerment anthem known around the world. Rhino pays some respect of its own to these legendary artists during

Amazon May Get Down, Get with Shaun Cassidy (Article)
Monday, February 3, 2014
It’s not uncommon for casual pop culture aficionados to think of famous figures in terms of their most high-profile accomplishments rather than the ones which are far more worthy of long-term remembrance, which is why mention of the name “Shaun Cassidy” so often brings to mind memories of The Hardy Boys and a cover of “Da Doo Ron Ron.” But if you’re a fan of quality television – specifically, the sort of series that you fall in love with, only to see it cancelled after only a single season – then we’d like to think that Cassidy’s name inspires flashbacks to your favorite moments from CBS’s

It’s February Already?!? (Article)
Monday, February 3, 2014
Yeah, we know: it’s been February for a few days now. But we here at Rhino try to catch up on our beauty sleep over the weekend and do a bit of recharging, so, frankly, we were a little shocked when we rolled over this morning and suddenly realized we’d left January behind way back on Friday. To celebrate the fact that 2014 is already one-twelfth over (or, if you prefer percentages to fractions, that it’s about 8.3% complete), we’d initially planned to entertain ourselves by serving up the closing track to Jesus Jones’s fourth album, 1997’s Already, which is a little ditty called – you guessed

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: The Mighty Hannibal (Article)
Monday, February 3, 2014
The Mighty Hannibal died last week at the age of 74. Born James Timothy Shaw, in 1939, Hannibal's "Hymn No. 5" is both a highlight and stylistic outlier in the oft-turbanned soul man’s lengthy career. Inspired by a newscast of Walter Cronkite discussing the growing amount of United States soldiers that were returning from Vietnam addicted to opium, “Hymn No. 5” excels in being an anti-war song that taps into the innate horror of war rather than delve into obvious punditry. Slowly chugging along like a jazz funeral dirge, accented by longing and pulsating organ, the track is an account of

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Grammy - Winners/Losers (Article)
Monday, January 27, 2014
The music industry hi-five and television spectacle that is the Grammys (that is big on both pageantry and red carpets) has been at it since 1959, and last night marked the 56th installment. As such, I've been going back, researching the various awards categories over the years. And not just looking at the winners, but those albums, artists and singles that were nominated...and lost. But here's the thing, I'm finding that, personally, the nominated 'losers' tend to be a lot more interesting/rewarding than the those who actually took home the gold statue. Some observations: Steve Wonder nearly

Les Paul (Article)
Tuesday, January 21, 2014
The name Les Paul is synonymous with the electric guitar. As a player, inventor and recording artist, Paul has been an innovator his entire life. Born Lester William Polfuss in 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Paul built his first crystal radio at age nine - which was about the time he first picked up a guitar. By age 13 he was performing semi-professionally as a country-music guitarist and working diligently on sound-related inventions. In 1941, Paul built his first solid-body electric guitar, and he continued to make refinements to his prototype throughout the decade. It's safe to say that rock
