On Saturday, Rhino Will Seriously Rock Your Record Store Day (Article)
Thursday, April 17, 2014
This Saturday is Record Store Day, but it’s highly unlikely that this information is any sort of revelation to you, since we suspect that most folks who’d frequent a record label’s website are the same sort of folks who’d have circled the third Saturday of April on their calendar the day they bought their calendar. But, hey, just in case you’re one of the few who’ve been steered this way by a friend and have no clue what we’re on about, we’ll go ahead and offer a few paragraphs from the event’s official website – and, yes, it is www.recordstoreday.com – to fill you in: Record Store Day was

Graham Central Station, Graham Central Station (1974) / Release Yourself (1974): Man, could there possibly be a better opening track to Graham Central Station’s self-titled debut? When you consider how long the band’s fans have been waiting for this material to get the digital-release treatment, it’s almost a little too apropos to hear them singing, “We’ve been waiting for so long / Waiting to play for you some of our songs.” Well, now’s their chance, as both of the band’s 1974 albums, Graham Central Station and Release Yourself, have joined Rhino’s digital catalog, giving you new access to

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Jazzfest Season (Article)
Monday, April 14, 2014
It's April. For me, that means one thing - JAZZFEST SEASON is here. And by that I am, of course, referring to one of the our country's longest running music festivals, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Or, if brevity is your thing, just, Fest. Spanning two weekends, while the fest indeed boasts national touring acts the focus (and beauty) is the celebration of "the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana." And then there are the night shows. This week's playlist highlights said NOLA indigenous music. Get a plane ticket. I'll see you on the fairgrounds, outside the

Rhino Factoids: Tom Waits (Article)
Thursday, April 10, 2014
Hey, kids, remember Salsa Rio Doritos? They had a decent run back in the ‘90s, went away for several years, and then staged a brief comeback in 2012. Why did they leave in the first place? Well, we don’t know this for a fact, but we’ve always suspected that it because they went into hiding to wait for the heat to die down from that whole Tom Waits soundalike thing. What’s that? You don’t know about the Tom Waits soundalike thing? Oh, boy, have we got a story for you… If you don’t have time to watch the video, here’s the nutshell summary: Frito-Lay asked Tom Waits to do a commercial for Salsa

New this week in the iTunes Rhino Catalog Room: Big Mountain, Unity / Free Up: Were it not for the success of the soundtrack to Reality Bites, it’s highly possible that Big Mountain would only be remembered today for having scored a minor hit in 1992 with “Touch My Light,” but as it is, most people know them because of their reggae-fied cover of Peter Frampton’s “Baby I Love Your Way,” which became a top-10 hit in 1994. You can find that track on Unity, along with “I Would Find A Way” and “Sweet Sensual Love.” Those interested in expanding their knowledge of Big Mountain beyond their biggest

Let Us All Herald the Arrival of Linda Ronstadt’s Duets (Article)
Tuesday, April 8, 2014
If you’re bummed at the news that Linda Ronstadt’s health is such that she’s had to bow out of attending her own induction at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, that’s certainly your right as a fan, but if it helps ease the pain a bit, she actually seems more excited about her new compilation, Duets, than the HoF honor…or at least that’s how it sounds in her interview with Randy Lewis in today’s L.A. Times: "It's nice," she said apprehensively from her home in the Bay Area, then sheepishly explained, "It's just something I never gave one thought to. Other people seem to be way more interested [in

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Full Moon Fever - 25 Years Gone (Article)
Monday, April 7, 2014
Tom Petty's first solo album, sans The Heartbreakers, Full Moon Fever, was released 25 years ago this month. Released at the tail end of the 80s - when rock still dominated the airwaves - with aid of MTV, this album effectively soundtracked the decade's flip. Remember, this was pre-Nevermind. Looking back at the album, scratch that, listening to the album now, it comes off as one of the great last gasps of ROCK AND ROLL ubiquity. These songs were everywhere; sure, maybe not in the same way that Thriller was, but more along the lines of Born In The USA, released 4 years prior. Hitting number 3

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Above The Fray - Four Soundtracks (Article)
Tuesday, April 1, 2014
I'm presently working as a music supervisor for a film that takes place in the mid 1970s. In part a road trip movie, the narrative follows a couple across a sepia toned United States as they make their way to the coast of Los Angeles. To mention anything more just yet would spoil the fun, save to say that Elvis is involved. As are handguns. Thinking about this project, I've had soundtracks and scores on the brain the past few months. The ones that simply work, and ones that work exceptionally well. This week's Spotify playlist highlights four that fall into the latter category, kicking off
