Now Available: Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band (Article)
Tuesday, September 29, 2015
In November of last year, just in the nick of time, we made the year of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band fans by releasing Sun, Zoom, Spark: 1970 to 1972, a limited edition set which featured the good Captain's three albums from that period of time, along with a bonus disc featuring 14 previously unissued outtakes from that era. We weren't kidding about that whole “limited edition” thing, but if you've been grumbling because you still really wanted to pick up the albums, then grumble no more, because all three of those albums are now available independently. Of course, you still have to

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough (Article)
Monday, September 28, 2015
I first heard the droning, almost supernatural blues, of Junior Kimbrough back in the late 90s via a Fat Possum Records sampler. This was largely "pre-Internet," and by that I mean there was no Google or search engines as we know them today. As such, Kimbrough's music was enveloped in a shroud of mystery. The world has since changed, the details of Kimbrough's life and his music are now only but a click away. But when I hear these songs, they still sound the way they did in that languid, humid summer of 1998. Droning blues from Mississippi, at times surreal in their delivery. ABOUT AQUARIUM

Digital Roundup: 9/28/2015 (Article)
Monday, September 28, 2015
New this week in the Rhino Room at iTunes: Love, Forever Changes (2015 Remastered Version): Your personal mileage may vary on which album by the band Love is the best of the bunch, but many an aficionado of their catalog would happily declare that it doesn’t get any better than Forever Changes. It wasn’t their most commercially successful effort (that honor goes to their self-titled debut) and it didn’t provide them with much in the way of hit singles (even though its opening track, “Alone Again Or,” is arguably the band’s best known song), but it’s on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Selected - Roy Ayers (Article)
Tuesday, September 22, 2015
This week's entry rounds up twenty favorites from Roy Ayers -- Jazz-funk pioneer, vibraphonist and soulman. The set kicks off with the first Ayers track I came in contact with, "We Live In Brooklyn, Baby" culled from the Roy Ayers Ubiquity album, He's Coming from 1972. All propers to Digable Planets for the turn on - the group sampled the cut on their track "Borough Check" off their sophomore album, Blowout Comb (1994). Nineteen tracks later we close out with "2000 Blacks Go To Be Free" found on Ayers collaboration with Fela Kuti, Fela & Roy Ayers. Get to know this legend. Vibes for life

Rhino Historic Tours: Farm Aid (Article)
Tuesday, September 22, 2015
30 years ago today, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson, and Neil Young took an offhanded comment made by Bob Dylan during Live Aid and brought to fruition the first in a series of concerts to help American farmers maintain their farms during times of economic hardship. The first Farm Aid concert took place on September 22, 1985, at the University of Illinois' Memorial Stadium, in Champaign, Illinois. 80,000 concertgoers thrilled to performances by some of country music's biggest names, as you might expect from an event intended to benefit the American farmer, but it wasn't all country folk: the

Doing a 180: Happy Mondays and Sinead O'Connor (Article)
Tuesday, September 15, 2015
This week brings a pair of reissues on 180-gram vinyl which can't really said to be cut from the same musical cloth, but they'd still both likely appear on most anyone's lists of albums that best defined the sound of 1990. Happy Mondays, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches: In the late '80s and early '90s, if you were an Anglophile whose tastes in music were defined predominantly by what bands were on the cover of New Musical Express, then you could hardly have avoided Happy Mondays, whose grooves were all the rage at the time. Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches was neither their first album nor
