Happy Anniversary: Pet Shop Boys, Please (Article)
Monday, March 24, 2014
Today marks the 28th anniversary of the release of the debut album by a former editor for Smash Hits and the UK branch of Marvel Comics and an occasional architect. You may know them better as Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, respectively, but still more know them simply as Pet Shop Boys. And the album in question? Please. We’re not just being polite. That’s actually the name of the album...although the band did reportedly name it that because they couldn’t resist the idea of consumers strolling into their local record stores and asking, “Can I have the Pet Shop Boys album, Please?” And, yes

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Jethro Tull Primer" (Article)
Friday, March 21, 2014
A SONG FOR JEFFREY Purists believe the initial album is best, "This Was," the one before Mick Abrahams left. If nothing came after, Tull would be seen as English blues progenitors, but a hit changes all perceptions. There were no hits on "This Was," but I'd start here, with the signature flute intro and then the instant groove. "A Song For Jeffrey," all of "This Was," is Jethro Tull for people who think they hate Jethro Tull. MY SUNDAY FEELING The opening cut on "This Was," and probably the most famous. Most jam bands can't hold a candle to this. BOUREE The instantly accessible rearrangement

Digital Roundup: 3/19/14 (Article)

Now on iTunes... Jerry Williams, Gone: Not everyone knows Jerry Williams – or Jerry Lynn Williams, as he was often billed – but the late singer/songwriter had a way with a guitar as well as a gift for penning songs that other artists made into hits, including Eric Claption’s “Forever Man” and Delbert McClinton’s “Givin’ It Up for Your Love.” The latter track appears on Gone, which was Williams’ second album but his first for Warner Brothers, and not only are the songs strong, but he’s got a hell of a band playing them, including Jeff Porcaro on drums, Donald “Duck” Dunn and James Jamierson, Jr

Happy Anniversary: Duran Duran, “Is There Something I Should Know?” (Article)
Wednesday, March 19, 2014
31 years ago today, Duran Duran released their eighth single, asking a question that took them to the top of the UK charts for the first time in their career: “Is There Something I Should Know?” The band’s eighth single, “Is There Something I Should Know?” was a standalone effort in the UK, not actually attached to an album, but when it emerged in the U.S. several months later, it was tacked onto the reissue of the band’s self-titled 1981 debut. Why? Because the band hadn’t really broken in the States when the singles from Duran Duran were being released, so it proved to be a good excuse for

Dr. Rhino's Picks #54 (Article)
Wednesday, March 19, 2014
Well, our decade-by-decade romp through the music of the 20th century has deposited us in the present. And there’s no time like it! So, here are a few songs that I dig from the last couple years or so. And, anyone who says that there is no good music being made anymore is out of their ever-lovin’ minds, my friends. Here’s the proof… ABOUT DR. RHINO A young Dr. Rhino first encountered the magic of song whilst being born in the front seat of a Lincoln Continental. As the attending physician recalls, the tune was “Touch Me In The Morning” by Diana Ross. It was a mind-blower. Over the years, Dr

New Monkees Tour Dates! May & June 2014 (Article)
Wednesday, March 19, 2014
A great deal of fun was had by the Monkees and their fans during the course of the group’s 2014 official convention this past weekend, including Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork all being on hand to receive their plaques certifying the Monkees’ induction into the American Pop Music Hall of Fame. Arguably the most tantalizing tidbit to emerge from the event, however, was the announcement that the trio would be kicking off a new tour in May, one which would be taking them along the east coast and through the Midwest. We know you’ve been chomping at the bit to find out if the Monkees

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Al Kooper Primer" (Article)

THIS DIAMOND RING You know the Gary Lewis & the Playboys version, but Al envisioned it as a horn-fueled soul number and recorded it on his album "Act Like Nothing's Wrong," check it out. LIKE A ROLLING STONE Yes, that's Al's organ on the supposed #1 rock single of all time. He's told the story many times of how he planned to play guitar but was intimidated by Michael Bloomfield and sidled up to the organ when Tom Wilson wasn't looking and Dylan liked what resulted. The saying is "You've got to have friends," even more you've got to have BALLS! I CAN'T KEEP FROM CRYING SOMETIMES Back when music
