Rhino Factoids: The Monkees Meet Johnny Carson (Article)
Tuesday, June 17, 2014
For a band best known as a quartet in their heyday, the Monkees have nonetheless spent a fair amount of time as a trio over the course of their career, including their current incarnation, but the lineup of Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork is one borne at least partially out of tragedy, due to the death of Davy Jones in February 2012 permanently ending any chance of the full foursome reuniting again. The first time the band soldiered on as a trio, however, came about as a result of Tork’s departure, leaving Dolenz, Jones, and Nesmith to carry on without him. While the trio’s two Tork

Rik Mayall May Be Gone, but Bad News Goes On Forever (Article)
Monday, June 16, 2014
When the news broke last week that British comedian Rik Mayall had passed away, we here at Rhino instantly did more or less exactly the same thing that everyone else did: we started running through our favorite quotes from The Young Ones. (It’s probably no surprise that “Dear Mr. Echo” came up, given that we went out of our way to cite it in our “happy birthday” post to Ian McCulloch.) After that, though, we started running through some of our other favorite Mayall moments, and while we can’t quite recall if it came about before Bottom or after Drop Dead Fred, but you can bet that it didn’t

Happy Anniversary: The Smiths, The Queen Is Dead (Article)
Monday, June 16, 2014
Although it didn’t hit our shores until June 23, today marks the 28th anniversary of the release of the album which many critics – and if we’d taken the time to do the math, we’d probably be safe in saying most critics – still view as the best full-length studio effort ever offered by the Smiths. The Queen is Dead was the third proper album by the Smiths (Hatful of Hollow doesn’t count, as it was a compilation), and while its chart placement was ultimately a notch lower than its predecessor, 1985’s Meat is Murder, which was the band’s only album to top the UK charts, it’s sold more copies than

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Blondie Primer" (Article)
Friday, June 13, 2014
X OFFENDER It sounds like a modern day girl group recording...because it was produced by Richard Gottehrer, whose first number one was "My Boyfriend's Back," who had his hand in so many sixties hits with thin production that sound just like...this. And, unless you lived in NYC, you never heard this, at least not until after "Parallel Lines." Catchy, minor work, not a bad start. RIP HER TO SHREDS This got a bit more airplay elsewhere, but not much. But this is more original than "X Offender," and you fall in love with the attitude, it still puts a smile on your face today. DENIS The first

Snap, Crackle & How’s Your Dad? A Father’s Day Playlist (Article)
Friday, June 13, 2014
When we offered up our Mother’s Day mix last month, we described the holiday as “an annual opportunity for greeting card manufacturers and affiliated businesses to convince you that you should love your mother a little bit more on this particular Sunday than you do every other day of the year, and if you don’t…well, obviously, you’re a terrible, terrible child.” But Father’s Day? Now that’s a real holiday! Nah, we’re just kidding. We just wanted to see the moms freak out…and it was totally worth it. Now that we’ve given them an aneurysm, though, let’s get to that Father’s Day mix, shall we? We

Rhino Factoids: Erasure, Abba-esque (Article)
Friday, June 13, 2014
Hey, you know that how that musical Mamma Mia! has all those ABBA songs in it? And you know how, after in premiered on Broadway in 2001, Americans were all, like, “Oh, man, I had forgotten how great these songs were,” and they were all grateful because it reminded them about the awesomeness of stuff like “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “S.O.S.,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and “Voulez-Vou”? Well, 22 years ago this month, Erasure tried to remind them, but not enough people were paying enough attention. That’s in the States, mind you. In the UK, Erasure’s Abba-esque EP – which, not coincidentally

MAY We Offer You a Playlist for Cinco de Mayo? (Article)
Monday, May 5, 2014
Today is May 5, a day which, for some people, also doubles as the only phrase they know in Spanish besides “una cerveza, por favor.” Yes, that’s right, we’re talking about Cinco de Mayo, and you know us: we can’t resist putting together a soundtrack for whatever level of celebration you plan to indulge in this evening. Unfortunately, there aren’t nearly as many songs featuring the number “five” in their title as you might think, but there are more than a few that feature the word “may.” Granted, not all of them are actually using it in terms of the month, but between the quality of the music

Happy Anniversary: The Cure, Disintegration (Article)
Friday, May 2, 2014
It’s hard to imagine a more fulfilling sensation for a musician than the experience of having your label tell you they’re concerned that your latest album is tantamount to career suicide, only to have it turn out to be your commercial apex up to that point. This, of course, is why the news of the success of the Cure’s Disintegration – which celebrates its 25th anniversary today – caused Robert Smith to kick off his shoes and go skipping giddily through the tall grass, giggling like… Whoops, sorry, it turns out we never actually got confirmation on that particular report, so we’d better

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Rod Stewart Primer" (Article)
Friday, May 2, 2014
Forget the old guy with the challenged voice singing standards and marrying women half his age. Once upon a time, Rod Stewart was a god, our most riveting live performer, if you ever saw him with the Faces, you'll never forget it. But I'm getting ahead of myself... SHAPES OF THINGS Forget the Yardbirds take, upon which Jeff Beck also played guitar, this version is a mind-bending adventure that will have you leaning into the speaker just to get closer the sound. And that's what it's all about, the sound. Back when there was no production, maybe a light show at best. And sure, Jeff is wailing

Hey! Ho! The Ramones Have Been Mastered for iTunes! (Article)
Thursday, May 1, 2014
If you’re a fan of the Ramones, then you’re doubtlessly aware that their back catalog has been available digitally for quite some time, but their hook-heavy punk stylings sound better than ever now that they’ve been mastered for iTunes. The albums that’ve received the mastering treatment stretch from their self-titled 1976 debut all the way up through 1987’s Halfway to Sanity, which – if you’re one of those people who absolutely, positively needs to know all the album titles – means that the other inclusions are Leave Home (1977), Rocket to Russia (1977), Road to Ruin (1978), End of the
