Happy Anniversary: Milt Jackson, The Ballad Artistry of Milt Jackson (Article)
Thursday, May 1, 2014
Not everyone makes a point of deciding on their favorite vibraphonist, let alone takes the time to determine their favorite album by said vibraphonist – because, seriously, there are only so many hours in the day, you know? – but if you happen to be a fan of Milt Jackson, a.k.a. the Wizard of the Vibes, then you may wish to raise a glass and celebrate the 55th anniversary of his seminal release, The Ballad Artistry of Milt Jackson. Produced by Nesuhi Ertegun, it doesn’t really do the album justice to say that it’s a smooth piece of work because, baby, it is smoooooooth. The opening track, “The

Dr. Rhino's Picks #60 (Article)
Wednesday, April 30, 2014
So, Damon Albarn has a new solo album out and that got me thinking about Blur. Man, I loved that band. They did a lot of different things and charting their development is somewhat of a master class in doing music right. Check it out for yourself… ABOUT DR. RHINO A young Dr. Rhino first encountered the magic of song whilst being born in the front seat of a Lincoln Continental. As the attending physician recalls, the tune was “Touch Me In The Morning” by Diana Ross. It was a mind-blower. Over the years, Dr. Rhino listened to many, many more songs. And, after several summers of diggin’ music

Happy Anniversary: The Cure, The Top (Article)
Wednesday, April 30, 2014
30 years ago today, the Cure released The Top, an album which, while not exactly what you’d call a happy-go-lucky affair, at least wasn’t as soul-numbingly depressing as its predecessor. In the wake of the none-more-black sentiments pervading every groove of 1982’s Pornography and the tour which followed the album’s release, tension within the ranks of the band led to the departure of Simon Gallup from the Cure’s lineup, while the almost anti-commercial material led Fiction Records’ Chris Parry to suggest to Robert Smith that perhaps it might be a good time to consider reinventing the band’s

Happy Anniversary: Van Halen, Fair Warning (Article)
Tuesday, April 29, 2014
33 years ago today, Van Halen released the one album amongst their classic David Lee Roth era output which can reasonably described as “underrated,” inasmuch as you can use the word to describe an album that hit #5 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and went double-platinum. It’s true, though: Fair Warning may be just as big a deal amongst the diehard VH fans as everything else in their discography, but if you look back at the band’s successes on the singles charts over the course of their career, it’s the only studio album – and we’re talking from their self-titled debut in 1978 all the way

Happy Anniversary: Alice Cooper, Flush the Fashion (Article)
Monday, April 28, 2014
During the ‘80s, more than a few rock ‘n’ roll types fell victim to a desire to freshen up their sound by giving it a bit of new-wave flair. Why do we say “fell victim”? Because although it proved a successful experiment for some artists, there were far more for whom it very much did not. As you might’ve guessed by the headline, we bring this up because it was 34 years ago today that Alice Cooper released his new-wavy effort, Flush the Fashion, but on which side of the fence does the album fall? Well, given that it’s a matter which continues to be contested more than three decades after its

Happy Anniversary: Blur, Parklife (Article)
Friday, April 25, 2014
Throughout the course of the mid-1990s Britpop movement, the battle royale remained the same: Blur vs. Oasis. Which was bigger? Which was better? Well, they’ve both got plenty of top-notch radio fare in their back catalogs, so we’d hate to really take a stand one way or the other, but we will say that it’s not exactly a hardship for us to shine the spotlight on Blur’s Parklife, which first hit stores 20 years ago today. One of the first arguments a Blur fan is likely to make against an Oasis fan who claims that their band is better is that Definitely Maybe didn’t even come out until August 30

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Janis Joplin Primer" (Article)
Friday, April 25, 2014
DOWN ON ME Nobody heard it until after "Cheap Thrills," but despite distant, lame instrumentation and production, Janis's magic shines through. At first, we in the hinterlands, i.e. not San Francisco, were thrown off by Joplin's vocals, the same way we were years later with Rod Stewart's, but we soon became enamored of her voice. We can debate all day long her range and proficiency, but there's no denying her passion, which is evident here, on the single from Big Brother's initial LP. Some people just have to make it. They need it. It's palpable. You can hear and feel the PASSION! COMBINATION
