Deep Dive: Donald Fagen, THE NIGHTFLY (Article)
Monday, October 3, 2022
After eight years and seven Steely Dan albums packed with questionable characters moving through all sorts of seedy situations, Donald Fagen went surprisingly personal on his debut solo album, The Nightfly. The album was titled after a character--Lester the Nightfly--created by Fagen based on jazz radio DJs he listened to as a kid in the 1960s. "This album is vaguely autobiographical – I think it’s possible to be more personal and subjective when you’re working by yourself," Fagen told NME in 1983 (via The Steely Dan Reader) about how his solo work differed from Steely Dan. Grateful Dead were in a transitional period leading up to the October 15, 1973 release of sixth studio album, Wake of the Flood. It marked a series of debuts for the group, none more profound than it being their first since the passing of founding member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. With drummer Mickey Hart MIA, The band’s initial studio effort in almost three years was also the start of four full-length efforts to be released on the freshly minted Grateful Dead record label. With the Dead incorporating even deeper musical textures and influences into their vast repertoire, from jazz to jug-band

The full-length spent weeks at #2 on the Billboard 200, never able to hit #1 due to Michael Jackson's monster Thriller release holding serve. Tensions with the group, however, had reached a breaking point on the resulting tour. Ultimately, the band and wild man singer David Lee Roth parted ways in early 1985. But before it all came crashing down, Roth kick-started his solo career in earnest with the December 19, 1984 release

Stay Tuned By Stan Cornyn: Rock Lost and Found, Part One (Article)
Tuesday, December 24, 2013
Every Tuesday and Thursday, former Warner Bros. Records executive and industry insider Stan Cornyn ruminates on the past, present, and future of the music business. Decades and decades ago, to find a record, you’d go buy it in a record store (probably). Fifty years later, record stores are fewer. So that physical record (a 45, a 33, rarely a 78, iffy a tape) with its cover, label, and “liner” notes, that feels like it’s all over. Internet downloads don’t contain liner notes and liner photos or covers or labels. It’s like a repeat of what happened to records back farther, back in the 1930s

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Christmas With The Louvin Brothers (Article)
Monday, December 23, 2013
Christmas music: It ain’t for everyone. But then, it is for some. In later years, I’ve gravitated more towards the solemn, poetic hymns that predate by a matter of centuries the sentimental oom-pa-pa of most holiday music, and Christmas With the Louvin Brothers is just as solemn as you’d expect. It’s strange, and compelling, to hear those heavily accented voices chiming over the familiar words of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” say, and the songs’ compositions force their harmonies into even tighter quarters; at times, they sound like an Appalachian Simon and Garfunkel. There’s a sparseness to the
