Aquarium Drunkard Presents: November Jukebox II (Article)
Monday, November 11, 2013
If last week's entry was a sort of 'lament' for Autumn, or the lack thereof, here in southern California, then this week's playlist focuses, in part, on a number of artists mining the sound of California's golden coast, actual or in spirit. Graham Nash saw a reissue several years back of his Songs For Beginners LP (arguably his finest solo work), and we kick things off with "Military Madness", which unfortunately sounds just as contemporary today as it did 35+ years ago. From there we dip into John Martyn's timeless "Over The Hill" before touching down with Dylan's "Day Of The Locusts" off of

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" (Article)

I just heard this on Sirius XM. It's getting to be that time of year again. When the days get shorter, and colder, and you hole up with your favorite fourth quarter album releases. At the end of 1964, it was hard to believe the Beatles had just broken in January. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" exploded out of car radios, transferred to the transistor and became imprinted upon baby boomers' brains when the band performed on the Ed Sullivan show. What was most incredible about that telecast is that it was really them. Fifty years ago, stars were not real people. We had almost no access. You could go

Depending on where you find yourself reading this, it may very well feel like "Fall" outside. And I use those quotations for a reason, as, here, in Los Angeles where I sit typing, it was a balmy 75 degrees today. As a non LA native, who grew up accustomed to four distinct seasons, I still catch myself on days like today having to consciously think about what season, what month, we are presently in. And while I'm obviously not alone in this phenomena, it can still be jarring at times. I mention this as, despite 12 years living in southern California, I still think in terms of seasons. And for

Stay Tuned By Stan Cornyn: Alice Cooper Takes Off (Article)
Tuesday, October 29, 2013
Every Tuesday and Thursday, former Warner Bros. Records executive and industry insider Stan Cornyn ruminates on the past, present, and future of the music business. 1971-1973 Alice Becomes a Warner Brother In 1971, Alice Cooper’s label (Frank Zappa’s Straight Records) is being sold to its distributor-in-chief, Warner Bros. Records. And by the time we get to the bottom of this page, that sale will be a done deal. Already in 1971, Alice Cooper and his gang were setting up their show-to-pop for 1972. Their cache of stage-mania included super-lighting ($5000 worth) to cover a specially-built stage

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Thank You Lou Reed (Article)
Monday, October 28, 2013
I was in the desert yesterday, driving back to LA from a weekend in Joshua Tree, when I heard the news - Lou Reed, dead at 71. A transformative artist, if Reed managed to get his hooks in you, he changed you. And that was it. Reed was the keynote speaker at SXSW in Austin a few years back. Listening to his exchange that morning with interviewer (music producer) Hal Wilner, I recall thinking about how long his music had been with me. The schlocky, beat up, 'greatest hits' cassette I happened upon in middle school, in hindsight, served as a sort of lexicon for the worlds of punk, glam, garage

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Night Train" (Article)
Friday, October 25, 2013
After a failed 1977 solo album, Steve Winwood licked his wounds for over three years and then released "Arc Of A Diver," which surprised everyone by containing a radio smash, "While You See A Chance." Traffic petered out with 1974's "When The Eagle Flies," an unjustly forgotten record with the great opener "Something New" and the exquisite "Walking In The Wind," and then Winwood segued to Stomu Yamashta's group "Go," recorded one phenomenal track, "Winner/Loser," and that brings us up to the aforementioned '77 solo debut, which contained such winners as "Hold On," "Time Is Running Out,"
