This Month's Picks...By Mac D. Stay tuned for more! HIGH TIME MC5 Detroit’s MC5 were at the vanguard of the revolution in the late ‘60s. What kind of revolution? Musical, cultural, you name it… These were golden times when rock n roll was the currency amongst the youth, and if one were to harness this power, the possibilities were endless. The Five took this notion to heart and subscribed to the message “total assault on the culture by any means necessary, including rock ‘n’ roll, dope, and fucking in the streets,†proffered by John Sinclair’s (a former teacher who was dubbed

Once Upon a Time on the Top Spot: Duran Duran, “The Reflex” (Article)
Monday, June 23, 2014
30 years ago today, possibly emboldened by having sold the Renoir and the TV set, Duran Duran stopped dancing on the valentine long enough to dance their way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in their career. The opening track of 1983’s Seven and the Ragged Tiger, “The Reflex” was the band’s pick for the album’s first single, but the label denied their request, resulting in the nearly inconceivable decision to opt for “Union of the Snake.” The song also failed to earn second-single status, with “New Moon on Monday” earning that position instead. In the label’s defense

Monday, June 16, 2014
The circus came to town Friday night…or in this case, Guided By Voices gigged at the Fonda in Hollywood. The club was, indeed, open. Robert Pollard anecdotes and leg kicks abound, as the band ripped through 25+ years of would-be hits. There was a period - a long period, actually - in which I made a rather valiant effort to keep up with both GBV's output and Pollard's solo career. Though at 4+ releases a year (minimum), I lost that battle. No matter, it all translates live, whether new or vintage. This week's playlist is an attempt to compile some favorites with with an eye toward the
