New this week in the Rhino Room at iTunes: Booker T. and the MGs, Green Onions: This week’s Mono Monday release is one of the most fondly-remembered instrumental albums of the rock era, and that’s not just because of the groove of the title track, although goodness gracious knows that it sure doesn’t hurt. Any band who can shift from covers of “I Got a Woman” and “Twist and Shout” into their own take on Acker Bilk’s “Stranger on the Shore” clearly has a lot of range, and they show it off throughout the course of the record. A tiny bit of trivia to close: the last track, “Comin’ Home Baby,” was

Yes, R.E.M. is Still Unplugged, But Have You Seen The Performance Clips Yet? (Article)
Tuesday, June 10, 2014
What, another post about R.E.M.’s Unplugged 1991/2001: The Complete Sessions? Why, yes, actually, and thanks for noticing. While you may well have caught the barrage of coverage about the set’s release on CD and for download on May 19, we’re guessing far fewer of you have revisited the footage from these particular concerts. As such, we wanted to provide you with a few clips from these performances, along with a bit of reflection on the songs in question. Enjoy! “The One I Love” (originally appeared on Document, 1987): Otherwise known as the band’s mainstream breakthrough, way too many people

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: LA Burnout - Volume Two (Article)
Tuesday, June 10, 2014
This is part two of two - find part one, HERE... LA Burnout is made up of the sounds floating around Los Angeles in the late ’60s and ’70s; a faded aural imprint of the canyons, beaches, wildfires, neighborhoods, late-nights and early mornings of a bygone L.A. Play this mix around dusk while driving through Topanga with the windows rolled down — it’s the next best thing to time travel. These are the tunes I was spinning while reading both Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll’s Legendary Neighborhood and Hotel California: The True-Life Adventures of CSN, etc. ABOUT AQUARIUM DRUNKARD

Rhino Factoids: Peace Sunday (Article)
Friday, June 6, 2014
The ‘70s and ‘80s were decades that were chock full of big concerts being held for the best of reasons. Sometimes it was to draw attention to human rights issues (the Secret Policeman’s Ball, the Conspiracy of Hope tour), sometimes it was provide humanitarian aid (the Concert for Bangladesh, Live Aid), and sometimes – but particularly in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s – it was to take a stand and protest nuclear weapons. In 1979, Madison Square Garden was booked from September 19th through the 23rd for the legendary “No Nukes” concerts in New York, which resulted in a triple-album document of

New this week in the Rhino Room at iTunes: Big Wreck, In Loving Memory Of / The Pleasure and the Greed: Aficionados of Canadian rock – or at least of Canadian frontmen (stand up, please, Ian Thornley) – will be pleased to see that the first two albums by Big Wreck have been added to our digital catalog. Their debut, 1997’s In Loving Memory Of, remains the band’s most popular effort by far thanks to tracks like “The Oaf (My Luck is Wasted),” “That Song,” “Blown Wide Open,” and “Under the Lighthouse,” all of which were top-40 hits in Canada. Unfortunately, while there’s considerable merit to

New this week in the Rhino Room at iTunes: Linda Ronstadt, The ‘90s Collection: When Ms. Ronstadt released her Duets compilation last month, the content was decidedly heavy on her ‘70s and ‘80s material, with a bit of a spotlight on Adieu False Heart, her 2006 collaboration with Ann Savoy, but it didn’t do much to remind listeners of the strong work she was continuing to deliver during the ‘90s. Thankfully, this new set does wonders to alleviate that problem by offering up more or less everything she delivered during the ‘90s…or at least the six studio albums she released during the decade

Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Hi, I'm 13. Or, Led Zeppelin (Article)
Tuesday, May 27, 2014
So, that 'game' where you could go back in time and see any artist do their thing, live? Yeah, I have the same answer every time - unwavering: Led Zeppelin. Maximum rocknroll. All their stuff is now available via Spotify, so this week's playlist rounds up twenty that have never let me down since copping my first cassette (Zoso, naturally) at summer camp after the sixth grade. Look for an expansive vinyl reissue series soon. PS - Crank these. ABOUT AQUARIUM DRUNKARD Based in Los Angeles, Justin Gage is the founder of the long-running, eclectic music blog Aquarium Drunkard.
