Doing a 180: Phoenix, United (Article)
Tuesday, February 17, 2015
Nowadays, all the kids love Phoenix: thanks to the success of their singles “1901” and “Lisztomania,” their 2009 album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix went gold in the US, and their fanbase was such that the 2013 follow-up Bankrupt! provided the band with their first top-five album. What sometimes gets lost in the shuffle, however, is that the band’s big commercial breakthrough was actually their fourth album. Out Now: Alphaville, FOREVER YOUNG (Article)
Friday, March 15, 2019
It took awhile for them to find their foothold in mainstream America, but when Alphaville released their debut single, “Big in Japan,” on January 12, 1984, they were an instant sensation just about everywhere else in the world, landing in the top 10 of the UK Singles chart and climbing all the way to #1 in Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland. (Mind you, it also topped the Billboard Dance Chart, so at least the cool kids in America were listening, even if top-40 radio hadn’t fallen for the group yet.) From there, Alphaville found themselves with another top-10 hit through much of Europe (“Sounds

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Murray the K's Holiday Revue" (Article)
Friday, June 21, 2013

Mitchell Reed was on WMCA. He was the hipster. Who came from L.A. And on the far end of the dial, at 1010 WINS, was New York's favorite, the Fifth Beatle, Murray the K. Actually, I became a big fan of Murray the K when he shifted to the FM band, Tom Donahue may have started free-form radio in San Francisco, but to this day that city's an island, a small market, the breakthrough was in New York, on WOR-FM, where Murray

Happy Anniversary: Chic, Risqué (Article)
Wednesday, July 30, 2014
35 years ago today, Bernard Edwards, Nile Rodgers, and Tony Thompson, along with singers Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin, released an album which kicked off with one of the greatest grooves of Chic’s career while promising – and absolutely delivering – “Good Times.” 1979 was a busy year for Edwards and Rogers – that’s also when they wrote and produced Sister Sledge’s We Are Family album – but when you’re capable of writing songs as strong as those that seemed to pop out of their pens every time they turned around, why not keep busy? Risqué was Chic’s third album, and while it only provided them

The Beach Boys (Article)
Tuesday, January 21, 2014
The Beach Boys' vocal harmonies are among the most unmistakable and enduring of the rock and roll era. Among rock and roll groups of the Sixties, the California quintet place second only to the Beatles in terms of their overall impact on the Top 40. They were the Fab Four's most serious competitors on a creative level, too. Paul McCartney has allowed that the Beatles' masterpiece, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, was their attempt to address the challenge posed by the Beach Boys' magnum opus, Pet Sounds - which itself was inspired by the British foursome's Rubber Soul. This creative
