The technical stuff first...these tapes sat unmixed for 43 years and while the Fillmore may have been a fabulous place to play in, as Al Kooper noted in his liner notes to the "Lost Concert Tapes" it wasn't the friendliest place to record in. There is that line between "historically significant" and "commercially acceptable" and while the buzzes, squeals and momentary distortions that rear their heads now and again might make this less than ideal for official release....it is the band's performance that make this an essential time piece. Kudos to the producers for not overly fussing with the tapes and processing the sounds too much to make it "pretty".
Playing many tracks from "Heavy" and debuting a few new songs that would be featured on the as yet unrecorded "In A Gadda Da Vida" the band comes off assured and tight..."Vida' in its two performances is already well seasoned and finely tuned..."My Mirage" and "Are You Happy" are also tight and nimble...
Friday's two shows are solid performances, leaning on the "Heavy" material and giving "Vida" its first airing. The band really comes on strong Saturday night with the one-two punch of "Are You Happy" (a song that Ron Bushy hated opening with since he had to go from a dead start to full bore very quickly!) and a breathless "Unconscious Power", chopping back the throttles for "My Mirage" and "So-Lo" and then concluding with the mind melting "Iron Butterfly Theme". The late show spools up a bit slower with "Possession" and "My Mirage", cranking it up with "Are You Happy" and "Her favorite Style" setting up the Big Kahuna that is "Vida"..letting 'em down easy with "So-Lo" and mopping up the room with "Iron Butterfly Theme".
Standing on the verge of greatness... it doesn't get much more chrome plated cool than this!

nice to hear some live unreleased version of early Iron Butterfly.
Ialways enjoy hearing live music that still evolving and raw.
I wish there was more of this type of recordings of other Butterfly perfomances.
Thanks to the Iron Butterfly and those who helped to release these gems

As a kid growing up in the 1960's I remember with delight this L.A. band ' Iron Butterfly '. I was 11 years old when the 1st album ' Heavy ' came out and I was stunned ! There were other incredible bands at the time. Most notable I enjoyed was the band ' Love ' with Arthur Lee as the genius behind it. Of course the ' Doors ' exploded on the scene. 'Blues Image ' was yet another , but none of those had the raw power and creativity that Iron Butterfly displayed.... This set of recordings from the Fillmore East 1968 really captures the intensity of this fine group ! With all that has been said about the classic track " In A Gadda Da Vida " there are so many other tracks that are just fantastic.... " My Mirage " is a Prog Rock tour de force ! " Possession and Unconscious Power " set the stage for Psychedelia mixed with elements of Prog and of course Hard Rock.... For me one of my fave tracks is " You Can't Win " . I just love the sound from this cut.... All in all this set from the Fillmore East 1968 is a document of unparalleled creatvity from a band that paved the way for others to follow....
