THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME (EXPANDED & REMASTERED SOUNDTRACK), now available as a collectible 4-LP 180-GRAM VINYL BOX, premiered on CD in late 2007 to coincide with Led Zeppelin's historic reunion for a concert in London benefiting the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund and honoring the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. Featuring music from the band's classic 1976 concert film, the set captures performances recorded during their legendary three-night stand at Madison Square Garden in July of 1973. Originally released in '76, the soundtrack now includes six additional songs.
When the band first announced that they would perform at the Ahmet Ertegun tribute, about 20 million fans mobbed the website holding the official ticket lottery, crashing the site. After witnessing the event in December, 2007, renowned rock journalist David Fricke wrote of Led Zeppelin in Rolling Stone that, “The only message they left behind was, 'We were the best - and still are.'”
While only a lucky few saw that show, Led Zeppelin's legions of fans can experience them live, in peak form, via the deluxe reissue of THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME (EXPANDED & REMASTERED SOUNDTRACK). All fifteen songs were remixed and remastered under the supervision of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. Featured are epic live versions of Led Zeppelin classics including “Rock And Roll,” “Dazed And Confused,” “Stairway To Heaven” and “Whole Lotta Love.” The six bonus tracks that were not part of the original 1976 release are: “Black Dog,” “Over the Hills and Far Away,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” “Since I've Been Loving You,” “The Ocean” and “Heartbreaker.”
With the added material and meticulous remastering, Jimmy Page says that THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME (EXPANDED & REMASTERED SOUNDTRACK), “differs substantially from the original soundtrack released in 1976, and highlights the technical prowess of Kevin Shirley, who worked with us on How The West Was Won. When it comes to THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME, the expansion of the DVD and soundtrack are as good as it gets on the Led Zeppelin wish list.” The package also boasts new liner notes by Academy Award®-winning director and former Rolling Stone editor Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous).
