“When he does open his mouth to sing, out comes the most unique male voice in rock, a voice anyone could recognize instantly at five hundred paces through a Dixie cup.”
- from Rolling Stone's original 1971 review of Every Picture Tells A Story
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, singer-songwriter and legendary voice Rod Stewart has been wearing it well for over four decades. From his roots in British blues-rock of the '60s through his laddish days as “Rod The Mod” to his stature as one of the all-time foremost interpreters of R&B classics and the American popular songbook - as well as his own memorable compositions - he is one of music's most enduring superstars. In recognition, a sweeping restoration and upgrade of his extensive solo repertoire begins with THE DEFINITIVE ROD STEWART, two CDs compiling 30 classic tracks-plus one previously unreleased track “Two Shades Of Blue” - spanning 1971 to 1998. The three-disc DELUXE EDITION also features a bonus DVD featuring 14 music videos spanning 1975-1998.
Arranged chronologically, Disc One of THE DEFINITIVE ROD STEWART opens with three songs from the artist's chart-topping 1971 masterpiece Every Picture Tells A Story: the #1 hit “Maggie May,” “Mandolin Wind” and the title track. Other seminal Stewart classics include “You Wear It Well” (from 1972's Never A Dull Moment) and “Stay With Me,” a nod to Stewart's time as lead singer for the Faces. The second half of the disc shifts to the artist's early Warner Bros. years with the ballad “Sailing,” the #1 hit “Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright)” and the Top 10 track “You're In My Heart,” among other favorites.
Disc Two spotlights music Stewart made during the '80s and '90s, including “Infatuation,” “Some Guys Have All The Luck,” “Love Touch,” “Forever Young” and “The Motown Song,” featuring the Temptations. Among the other highlights are Unplugged versions of “Have I Told You Lately” and “Reason To Believe,” the latter featuring Stewart's former Faces mate and Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood. The collection's one previously unreleased track, “Two Shades Of Blue,” was recorded in 1998 during the When We Were The New Boys sessions.
The DELUXE EDITION of THE DEFINITIVE ROD STEWART features a bonus DVD with 14 music videos filmed to accompany some of the artist's most beloved songs. Spanning 1975-1998, the video collection includes never-before or rarely-seen clips including “Sailing,” “The Killing Of Georgie (Part I & II)” from A Night On The Town as well as the MTV-era recurrents “Hot Legs,” “Da Ya Think I'm Sexy” and “Young Turks,” among others.
