So just when you thought you had everything you’ve ever needed from the Nuggets I & II, along comes this incredible 4-CD box set focused on the Southern California music scene from 1965-1968— everything from straight up fuzz-guitar drenched punk to lighter psychedelic pop by mostly unknown bands you’ve probably never heard of (um, Limey & the Yanks anyone? No worries, the liner notes and band photos do a great job of introducing them) alongside mainstream pop acts such as the Byrds, Randy Newman, Beach Boys, Lee Hazelwood, Monkees, Doors and Peter Fonda (yep, the actor is also makes an appearance here as a surprisingly impressive singer!) … superb packaging and sound quality, not to mention a ton of reading materials, artwork and photo’s… keep the Nuggets coming!

A lot of music can take you back in time—but not necessarily to a specific place. This is a rare exception that achieves both, which is particularly the reason why I’m coveting this latest nuggets offering from Rhino. From the moment you tear off the shrink wrap and open the hard cover (which would make a great poster by the way) you are bombarded with original artwork of sunset strip club flyers and 45 singles labels, all of which nearly masquerades the 4 CD’s of rad music that await. Great care was obviously taken by the curators in not only the selection of music, but also in capturing a unique “vibe†with each CD uniquely telling (and essentially rewriting) the history of Southern California's music scene in the 60's. Every single song and band (whether obscure or popular) is rightfully given equal representation in the liner notes, along with stories of the sunset strip clubs-- the essence of which reveals the vast landscape that actually constituted the sixties music scene in LA-- and one which was more complex, radical, exciting and in general far more interesting than what the city is typically given credit for. This collection truly immerses you in that otherwise unknown, seemingly forgotten time and place.
