This is how all live rock n' roll music recordings should sound-- passionate, loose, cathartic, and out of control-- with just enough audience ambience to heighten the excitement and energy of actually being there. There isn't one weak performance on this record, and the diversity of music contained within this soundtrack-- folk (Joan Baez/CSN), r&b soul (Sly & the Family Stone), boogie-amphetamine charged blues (Ten Years After/Santana), and of course rock n' roll -- the legendary live performances by Joe Cocker, Sha Na Na and Jimi Hendrix, remastered and sounding more brilliant than ever in this reissue, are in themselves enough to make this worth replacing your old scratchy vinyl.

Brilliant live performances... but keep in mind this is a "soundtrack", and some of the in-between song "hippie" rants and announcements can be annoying. I was hoping Rhino might've made these seperate tracks so that I can edit them out when ripping to mp3. Nevertheless, they typically appear at the end of the tracks, which helps if you want to jump directly to the next song. My other issue with this compilation is why was the Who's "We're Not Gonna Take It" chosen over "My Generation"? It seems to me it would have obviously been more suited to the Woodstock theme/film, not to mention the vibe of the other performances.

The sound track to the movie is an excellent recording of an outside concert. All of my favorite bands, being live gives it a raw edge. My only complaint is that it isn't in order of appearance, it's in order of the movie.
