JOY DIVISIONStill (Collector's Edition)$49.98 Vinyl $24.98 CD The Joy Division compilation STILL was released in October 1981, just over a year after the band's lead singer and principal songwriter Ian Curtis took his own life. It's a fascinating twenty-track collection of studio outtakes, b-sides, live cuts and other rarities from the iconic post-punk band. Coinciding with the U.S. premiere of Control, the new Anton Corbijn-directed film about Curtis' life, Rhino's deluxe STILL (COLLECTOR'S EDITION) is an expanded 2-CD set featuring the original album on Disc One plus a bonus Disc Two presenting historic, previously unreleased live material. At the time of its original release in '81, all of the material on STILL was previously unissued except for two songs, “Glass” and “Dead Souls,” both stand-out studio recordings from 1978 and 1979, respectively. Also featured is material from Joy Division's last-ever concert, recorded at Birmingham University in May 1980 including the only time they performed “Ceremony” live (the song would later become a New Order single). Another track captured at Birmingham is “Shadowplay,” a song covered in 2007 by The Killers for the soundtrack for the film Control. Other highlights include a live cover of The Velvet Underground's “Sister Ray” and a 1979 studio recording of “Something Must Break.” Disc Two presents six songs from a soundcheck and concert recorded live at Town Hall in High Wycombe on February 20, 1980. The eight concert song performances include “Twenty Four Hours,” “The Sound Of Music” and “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Soundcheck recordings of six selections include “Isolation” and “The Eternal.” Joy Division formed in Manchester, England in 1977, and had an immense and profound impact on contemporary music in a very brief time together. They recorded only two full-length studio albums, UNKNOWN PLEASURES and CLOSER, prior to lead singer Ian Curtis' 1980 suicide, just before the single “Love Will Tear Us Apart” became their breakthrough hit. The remaining members - guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris - disbanded Joy Division after Curtis' death, and re-formed as New Order. 2-CD COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS of the seminal Joy Division titles UNKNOWN PLEASURES and CLOSER are also available. In addition, Rhino.com is exclusively offering 180-Gram Vinyl editions of UNKNOWN PLEASURES, CLOSER and STILL; these feature the original track listing for each album only, not the bonus material from the CD COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS. The LIMITED EDITION JOY DIVISION BOX SET (VINYL), housing all three of these LP titles on 180-Gram Vinyl, is also a Rhino.com exclusive - only 3,000 copies were made. :: See all releases by Joy Division.
