“...in the endearing musical time-piece HONEYDRIPPER, the indie icon lets his narrative gifts take the lead and the social issues follow like a tight bass line. The result is one of Sayles' best films. The music, a mix of blues, seminal rock and newcomer Gary Clark Jr.'s performance, will be an obvious draw.”

“HONEYDRIPPER looks at the moment when the electric guitar became the dominating instrument in music, and...shows how rock 'n' roll can captivate a community.”

Rhino Records' HONEYDRIPPER (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) evokes the time and place - rural Alabama circa 1950 - of director John Sayles' new music-themed period film HONEYDRIPPER with a mix of classic and new blues, soul, roots and blues-rock recordings. The disc features three scorching tracks by actor and virtuoso guitar slinger Gary Clark, Jr., about whom Texas Music Magazine wrote, “Probably the most talented Texas guitarist since a certain SRV.”

Other highlights on Rhino's musical companion to the film include cuts from Keb' Mo' and Mable John - who, along with Clark, appear in the movie - and the legendary vocalist and performer Ruth Brown. Brown, whose own '50s-era rise to stardom caused Atlantic Records to be known as “the house that Ruth built,” was originally cast in HONEYDRIPPER as well, but fell ill as production began and passed away in 2006. Also featured are selections by Memphis Slim, Hank Williams, Barrence Whitfield, New Beginnings Ministry and others.

Emerging Pictures' HONEYDRIPPER spotlights a make-or-break weekend for Harmony, Alabama's Honeydripper Lounge and its beleaguered owner, piano player Tyrone “Pine Top” Purvis (Danny Glover). Deep in debt, Purvis hires famous electric guitar man Guitar Sam to play a one-night gig and save the club, but he doesn't show. Enter young Sonny (Gary Clark, Jr.) -a character fashioned after Delta blues legend Robert Johnson-who turns up claiming he's the equal of Sam any day. He proves his claim with incendiary playing as he brings rock 'n' roll to Harmony.
