ZUZU'S PETALSKicking Our Own Asses: The Best Of ZuZu's Petals$19.98 CD
In the early '90s, the all-female indie rock trio ZuZu's Petals were a unique presence in the Minneapolis music scene, infusing some heartland goddess energy into the local land o' lakes soundscape. Rhino Handmade salutes their short but wonderful life-span with KICKING OUR OWN ASSES: THE BEST OF ZUZU'S PETALS, the first-ever compilation of their output. It plucks favorites from the group's two albums on Twin/Tone-a label home to other Twin Cities icons including The Replacements, Soul Asylum and The Jayhawks-as well as assorted singles and rarities. The 20-track disc also features one previously unreleased cut, “Poor Little Rich Girl,” recorded in 1991. The compilation was produced by ZuZu's Petals members Laurie Lindeen (now married to Paul Westerberg) and Linda Pitmon. The booklet features liner notes from Petals' pal and fellow Twin Cities player Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks, Golden Smog) and rarely seen photos. KICKING OUR OWN ASSES: THE BEST OF ZUZU'S PETALS is available exclusively from Rhinohandmade.com in a numbered, limited edition of 5,000 copies at $19.98. ZuZu's Petals was comprised of Lindeen (guitar, vocals) and Pitmon (drums) as well as Coleen Elwood (bass, vocals). They came together after Lindeen, who hailed from Madison, Wisconsin, survived a bout with M.S. and made the life-changing decision to transplant to then-musical hotbed Minneapolis and form a band. She came up with the name ZuZu's Petals after catching a late-night airing of It's A Wonderful Life, where the flowery treasures Jimmy Stewart finds in his pocket are an unforgettable pop culture talisman for a second chance at getting things right. ZuZu's Petals' Twin/Tone albums When No One's Looking (1992) and The Music of Your Life (1994) are out-of-print rarities, but the band's unruly pop-punk sound-often compared to the Slits or the Breeders-remains alive and vital. Petal up with cuts including “Cinderella's Daydream,” “Babblin' Mules,” “Jackals,” “Chatty Catty” and more on the group's first-ever musical bouquet of favorites, only from Rhino Handmade.
