Singer/songwriter/arranger/producer, acid-soul pioneer, record label entrepreneur—Curtis Mayfield was a visionary whose talents easily won a mass audience of all races. And through his music, he sought to enlighten all who would listen about freedom and civil rights. Born on June 3, 1942, and raised in Chicago singing gospel, Mayfield came to R&B/pop fame in the late ’50s/early ’60s with The Impressions before launching his solo career in 1970 with the release of the album Curtis—a musically adventurous and ultra-funky work featuring songs that pointedly addressed the harsh day-to-day social, racial, and political issues then facing African-Americans. To a great degree, the record remains relevant today and 30 years after its original release we’ve spruced it up for CD with better-than-ever remastered sound and nine bonus tracks ranging from previously unreleased demos and alternate takes to the single edit of “(Don’t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below We’re All Going To Go.”  We lost a good friend when Mayfield died at the end of 1999, but by working with him over the past several years to restore and reissue his catalog, we have and will continue to honor him by making his timeless musical legacy available for generations to come.
